Having problem with dead key in Leopard

Hello. I'm having problem with dead key in Leopard.

In Tiger it was working, but in Leopard dead key "'" doesn't work.

In Tiger I could use OPTION key as well to get Latvian special characters (both worked - OPTION Key and dead-key), but in LEOPARD OPTION key is the only possibility to get these characters.

How can I get dead key "'" working?

I'm using Latvian language with Latvian keyboard layout.

Here are images how it looked in Tiger:
1) Before dead key is pressed:

In Keyboard Viewer, is the dead key a special color in Leopard (like it is in Tiger)?

If not, it sounds like Apple changed the layout to eliminate this feature.

If that is the case, there should be no problem installing the Tiger layout into Leopard or making a new one to match the Tiger layout using the tool Ukelele.

The key is colored like in Tiger:

but when i press that key, only space bar changes:

The problem is that Ukelele doesn't work in Leopard...

Try downloading and installing the LatvianT.keylayout from my iDisk:

This is the Tiger layout. If it doesn't work, then it's a Leopard bug.

To install you put it in Home/Library/Keyboard Layouts, logout/login, then check its box in system prefs/international/input menu. Probably best to uncheck the box for the existing Latvian layout before.

I installed your keyboard layout, but problem isn't solved - dead-key doesn't work...

Any ideas?

Yeah, I'm having the same problem. I need to set a new keyboard layout for Leopard. I hope that Apple will change this, because most of the users dunno how to set up a new kyboard layout.

I don't think it will help if they do. I gave the other fellow a new layout and it doesn't work. This probably means there is a bug in Leopard. When I get my copy I'll see if there are problems with other layouts too.

Yes, I'm having the same problem and it really appears to be a bug rather than some intentional breaking change since the dead key as such works. There is no need for it though since diacritical letters do not show up.
Although overall Leopard experience seems quite well, that bug is quite disappointing.

ok, i got answer 🙂

so - first problem was that ukelele didn't work in leopard (it wasn't possible to start new layout), but it was possible to edit Tom Gewecke posted layout.

There it is possible to change every thing (dead-key as well).

So I edited it and now i have layout where dead-key works -

Just do what Tom Gewecke said with this layout. It should work!

x) I checked US layout and unchecked Latvian layout in System preferences/international
x) I copied layout in Library/Keyboard Layouts/
//x) i restarted computer to see if it works, but it didn't
x) I opened layout with Ukelele
x) I double clicked dead-key and pressed edit
x) There was no special key assigned to any key, so I changed the output of every key as it should be.
x) Then i restarted computer again and it worked.

Thanks. The one I sent you was not good, I should have checked it. I'll replace it on my iDisk too. At least it seems there is no serious bug and Apple just used a bad file for the layout, which is good news.
