installation bug - login pane stuck with spinning wheel

The dual 2GHz G5 PowerMac is stuck with the spinning wheel of death on the login pane after the restart post installation from dvd.
No login possible, never was since the install process.
The computer is accessible and seems to run fine when connected to from the network.
Any idea anyone?

MacBook, iBook G4, Cube, Mac OS X (10.4.8)

'safe boot' just doesn't change a thing

the mouse cursor stay normal until it is moved over one of the user-icons on the login pane, and then the spinning-wheel takes over

I can connect with different users from the network using AppleTalk

the computer seems to otherwise be running in the background...

removed the preferences from the login pane using remote computer

restarted, same problem

I have exactly the same problem on a G5 iMac.
As soon as I try to click on a login account I get the spinning wheel.

Booted up from the DVD and checked the disk using disk utility and it says its fine.
I can also mount the disk fine using target disk mode.

seems like it is a problem with the 'login pane' app, but how can we skip it and directly start from one of the user acounts?

it seems this bug is the same bug as the one with the blue screen with spinning wheel

the only difference between us and them seems to be that we have more than one account, hence the login pane appearing before the lock up

okay, so it seems to me that the upgrade isn't working, but the "archive and Install" or the "clean install" is. So, if I backed up my computer prior to installing Leopard and do I clean install, can I just transfer over my files like iTunes songs and pictures, or are those not accessible any longer?

Got the same problem on my Power Mac G5 Dual. Make it past the log on and I can access programs from the dock.

I installed 10.5 on my PowerBook G4 with no problems.
