DVD Not Recognized

My MacBook Pro will not recognize the installation disc. It just spits it back out. Any fixes other than returning the disc?

Ok - still no luck - but tried the following:

1. Used disk cleaner on disk
2. Used the lens cleaner in macbookpro
3. Tried to use DVD over network from Imac - wouldn't allow it
4. Tried restarting hold down the C key

Nothing seems to work. I don't have days to install an OS - and it kinda ticks me off when I see the apple ads bashing vista yet their own new os won't even install!

Any other helpful hints?

On a whim, I tried to load a regular movie DVD in my MacBook Pro (a movie I had been watching on the computer just the other night--so I know the disk is OK), and it does the same thing the Leopard disk does . . . just spins up makes some noises and then spits it back out. I have never had the MacBook Pro reject a movie DVD until today.

Is it possible that somehow the Leopard disk has caused the DVD drive to no longer work at all? Has anyone else tried to load a different DVD on their computer AFTER the Leopard disk gets spit out?

My MBP had the same problem, sort of. At first it didn't see the disc and kept ejecting it like it was blank. It loaded up in my MP just fine and after a restart, the MBP could miraculously read it. During the restart booting from the disc, the MBP did however eject it and after yet another try, accepted the disc and completed the install. Strange.

Good for you. I tried 4 times last night - and I've tried it umpteen times this am. Occassionally - I mean 1 in 10 times it will get me to the install screen - but it never gets past the restart. I've setup an appointment at the Genius bar - I recommend others do likewise. If apple gets flooded with GeniusBar appointments to install the new OS - they will likely be more proactive in finding a solution. I'm sure they don't want lines of folks outside their stores with installation issues.

OK. I tried the DVD Lens Cleaner and that did not work. I tried repairing permissions with my Tiger installation disc. That did not work. As a last resort, I tried the fix suggested by SASouth. It worked! Installation took about 45 minutes and all my apps seem to work fine. To re-cap, here is SASouth's solution.

"I restarted the MBP into Tiger and then put in the Leopard disc. Once the Leopard disc was in the drive, I held the MBP upside down with the screen open. The disc mounted! I put the mac on the desk and I double clicked on the "Install Mac OS X" icon, put in my password and the mac restarted. While it was restarting I held it upside down again while it booted off of the DVD. After it booted into the installer I had it verify the DVD, which it did successfully."

I've been having the same issues here. I'm posting my original message to THIS thread so Apple MIGHT just take notice. This MUST be a superdrive firmware issue.

I'm on my second machine installing Family Pack of Leopard. First install on macbook superdrive went fine. However, My iMac G4 1.25 GHz keeps spitting out my disk after 30 seconds. (My drive is SONY DVD RW DW-U10A) Nothing shows up in the finder. No other issues with other DVDs and the like. Anyone else having this same issue? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

On install on a IMac G5 (PowerPPC), the DVD came out everytime !!!

So
- I borrowed a MacBook Pro from one of my colleague and inserted the DVD, then switched off.
- I started the IMac, and when starting completed launched the laptop in Target mode (with T key) : I could then see the MacBook AND the Leopard installer DVD on the IMac screen.
- Double-clicked on the install icon on the DVD. Got the restart message and said OK
- The IMac restarted OK, but it was a bit long before I could see the first language screen (maybe 4-5 mn). Then install went on without any problem.

The thing is to use the laptop (or any other Apple machine that will accept the DVD) as a DVD player only. Because if you try it the other way around, the install program will say "installation is impossible" and "you have to change your hard disk to GUID partition" (which is for Mac Intel)... that's normal ! the install program just thinks your hard disk is on an Intel machine, but it's not !

Hope this helps !!!

Good luck.

I should have put this at the end of the thread. I think SASouth has found the solution. This is my post from above:
