Photos are importing upside-down

I've been using iMovie 4 successfully to create slideshows for years. Now, suddenly I can't get some photos to import in proper orientation. They may show up in the clips pane right side up, but they won't come into the timeline that way. I've tried cutting and importing them again and again, but nothing works. This happens in various places in the slideshow. They are all oriented in iPhoto just fine. One slide has become black, with only one small area showing in the clips pane window. There is one area near the end where half of the photos keep flipping over.

Do I have to bring them into iPhoto again?

iMac G4, Mac OS X (10.3.x)

Hi Nancy

a. I would localize the photos eg. L1000153.JPG and open it in another photo-program
eg PhotoShop or GraphicConverter - and turn it right here and SAVE.

b. Can this be a "Low free space on internal (start-up) hard disk problem" ?
Your hard disk should have at least 10Gb free space or rather 25Gb.
Less and strange things occures due to that Mac OS is in reality UNIX and behaves likeways.

As Bengt already mentioned, try opening the photos directly with another program and see how the orientation is. I don't use iPhoto much, but it may be that when you rotate photos there, it doesn't actually rotate the original file but instead just stores a note or command to display the file turned 180°. When you then import to iMovie, that "note" is not carried over and iMovie shows them to you how they actually are oriented in the file.
If they are truly upside down in the original file, then you need to rotate them with another application and save the rotated version then use that new version in your iMovie project.

I will try those suggestions, but it concerns me that this is the first time it has ever happened in all the years I've been using iMovie 4. Is my software corrupted suddenly? Should I uninstall and re-install? I'm never sure how to do that--should I take it to a tekkie?

Thank you, Bengt and Patrick. I opened some of the problem photos with Photoshop Elements, rotated them, saved, and imported them to iMovie.
I guess that solves everything except why it started happening. I'm afraid it will mean new OS and computer, and months of learning all over again.
