Firewire Dead

Hey Guys....
Ok, I'm using a G5 dual 2ghz with 10.3.6, and I haven't changed anything in my configuration lately....haven't added any new software/hardware to my system.

Suddenly my firewire ports are dead. I was capturing some footage from a cam in Final Cut Pro, then I got the beachball, Final Cut froze, so I had to reboot...upon coming back, my ports were gone: In System Profiler, under "Firewire" it just says "No information found".

I've restarted numerous times, reset the PRAM and the SMU.

Any common experiences, solutions or links? Help!

I have a problem with Firewire and an EyeTV unit as well. If I use the front FW port on the G5 dual 1.8; it works fine. If I move the EyeTV cable to the rear FW 400 port; all of the FW ports lock up. I can re-claim them by powering down, disconnecting the G5 from power for 5 minutes, and then rebooting.

Any thoughts on why the front FW400 port works fine while the rear port does not? I have no other FW devices connected.

Apple support was able to help me.

Symptoms were: System Profile said "no information found". Power to iSight and iPod, but would not mount/recognize.

AS told me to....

Restart the computer with the Option / S / Command / O keys all held down. And then when the code prompt comes up, I typed in "reset-nvram" return, and then "reset-all" return.

(actually, we tried to do it manually first but I couldn't find the switch)

Not sure if this is 100% accurate because we went about troubleshooting some other things, so you might want to check with somebody more savvy before trying. But it worked for me.

Best of luck to all.

Ok....my turn.

I wanted to expand my USB and Firewire since I have some devices. I just purchased a new Sony Handycam DC42 and it can use Firewire. So I purchased Adaptec Duoconnect. Mind you I also have the new 21" Apple Display (Silver). At first it started great. But then after a second restart, the ports on the monitor are dead, my USB ports on the system are dead and it was weird. I removed the card and everything is back to normal. The card was placed in slot 2 then 4, so I tried different slots (PCI-X).

According to Apple's web site, it seems they do not endorse duo cards (USB and Firewire) on one card. Is it possible that it draws too much power? Just an experiment, I am going to get just a Firewire card and add it in and see what happens.

Thank you for the Advice.

What ended up being the problem, was the LaCie D2 Extreme. The Board inside the LaCie was bad, I took it to the Apple Store, the FW 800 Worked on there G5 2.5 but not on My fried's 2.0G5. or my 2.0 (Only the 400 worked on it) Apple was nice enough to let me swap out the LaCie d2 Extreme on the spot with another off the shelf. It fixed it on the my now old 2.0 G5 as I have just soled it & bought the new 2.7G5

I am going to pick up a LaCie FW 800 pulse a 400 PCI Card. Because (1) I have seen FW 800 run faster off PCI (On a re seller G5) & the G5's it seem's to me have to little FireWire power. I will let you know when I find out once I put them in.

Also I was told the new G5's that just came out have more I do not know for sure so please find out more as this is just what I was told by a Apple re seller. (My 2.7 works great eaven with two FireWire Apple Cinema Displays then. daisy chained Eye TV 200, iSight, iPod, LaCie d2 Extreme runing off 800 & Sometimes I use my 12 Inch PowerBook off one of the front FW port.

That's alot to power so I am very happy now.
Thank You All very much for the Advice.

I was having similar problems as well.

It started off with my iSight plugged into the fron FireWire port and the iPod plugged into the back. Even if the iSight were off, transfer speeds would be slow, very slow. The moment I would unplug the iSight, everything would work fine.

Also noticed slowdowns when I plugged in an external HD (powered) and my iPod either into the secondary port on the HD enclosure or the front port.

My choices were to 1) purchase a FW 800-->400 converter for the iPod or 2) purchase a FW 400 card that would work in my G5.

I chose option 2 -- a Belkin card from CompUSA. The local AppleStore (Peabody, MA) didn't cary a Firewire card that would work in my G5.

Does it work? I don't really know. The iPod works when plugged into the card and the HD works when plugged into the rear FW400 port.

I haven't added the iSight to the mix, yet. It's like driving a nail into your finger - you know it's going to hurt...

I have had that same thing happened to me, with a LaCie D2.
In a cace when one part of a FireWire LaCie goes (Like the 400 Port may work but not the 800)
The bridge in the Hard Drive case is shot. You can still pull the drive from the LaCie box & put it in your G5 if you have the space. If not..

What you have to do is try to get a LaCie to fix it.

Sorry to tell you this,
Thomas

Similar Problem: I have an external Firewire enclosure for a notebook drive. It works fine on firewire with my G4 running 10.3.9. I tried to transfer some files to my G5 dual 2GHz and have problems.

The disc mounts fine if I use the USB 2 connector. However, with firewire it will some times appear on the desk top but if I double click it I get the spinning beach ball. I can dissconnect it and the get an error message. Finder seems to be getting stuck. Looking at the console log I see:

Oct 3 11:36:11 David-Whites-G5 kernel[0]: jnl: flushing fs disk buffer returned 0x5

the line repeasts many time until I get the error due to me unplugging the drive. If I re-boot with the drive connected (to the front of the computer) it will work. I tried connecting it to the rear firewire and I get the same problem.

Did any of you sort this out?
