Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Applications won't quit, error 600, applications won't relaunch

I have installed (and reinstalled) Leopard, apparently smoothly. A normal upgrade install, over 10.4 Tiger.

But now many applications that I launch will not quit properly. Their windows close but they continue to appear active in the Dock. The Dock icons remain unresponsive. Yet when I try to relaunch the application, using "Recent Items," or by double-clicking an icon in the Applications folder, I get error 600 in this message: "The application xxxxx cannot be launched. -600"

Force Quit will not quit the applications. Nor will the machine not restart normally -- it must be forced to shut down. The it will restart, but the problems begin all over again. So -- quitting any of these applications requires a full forced restart in order to use them again. The problem is with native apps, like Mail, Software Update, Quicktime, iTunes, Safari, and so forth.

Any clues?

When searching for Apple error code meanings, I found this:

-600 procNotFound No eligible process with specified process serial number

+ this:

The error -600 means that the process serial number that you sent is either invalid or is the serial number of a process that does not accept Apple events--that is, the high-level event bit of the destination process's size resource isn't set.

+ this:

Error -600

An error occurred while launching.

An unknown error (-600) occurred.

This is the standard Macintosh error procNotFound. It is usually a response when trying to send an AppleEvent to a nonexistent target (or, more technically, when the mach port for AppleEvents for that target cannot be found). This would usually be generated by the toolbox, but Entourage generates that error in these cases:

(1) if Entourage cannot find the Alerts Daemon (usually found in the Office subfolder) to launch to show the "toasts" (notifications that new mail has been received),

(2) if Entourage is trying to open a document and cannot find the Finder application (this is usually when you're opening Entourage on a system that is too old, so probably not your case), and

(3) in some generic process code that tracks whether other processes (e.g., the Database Daemon) are running.

Does this mean anything to anyone?

I have exactly the same issue, pain pain pain. you launch them then quit them but they havent quited, you can still select them with apple tab, and you cant restart as finder cant quit them. ugly

im on my fourth install attempt, next one is the full erase followed by weeks of painful realisations when i find apps i havent yet re installed groan.

I have discovered two problems that may be related. Both are discussed in other forums, but without satisfactory solutions yet.

1) My administrator account is gone. The account is treated like a standard user account, with limited permissions.

2) I cannot verify or repair disk permissions -- not even after starting up from the OS 10.5 install disk.

Could these all be related somehow?

Here, let me add a few more to the list...

Apps that don't quit:

Missing Sync For Windows Mobile
Pages
Quicken
Vectorworks

I am going to try updating my Intego Virus etc. software, as i know that some of that was out of date, and I got warnings when I booted in Leopard. I'll report back on that.

when accessing system preferences thru the dock, it gets stuck when i try to exit.

after having removed the icon from the dock, and when accessing it thru finder, i can close it and re-open, no trouble.

i have a rather stupid question, but these problems are making me doubt my memory.

argh!

i just went from admin to standard user!!!

how can i reinstate myself as an admin?
