Please post RAM successes, failures HERE

Like the subject says, if you purchase RAM from a third party, please post it here, including brand/model#/size/place purchased/price. You may want to indicate if the RAM says it was specifically G5 compatible. If this is not listed we will assume it did not state G5 compatibility. Also, please do not list multiple entries for the same product unless your experience differs from what has been posted.

Here is an example of RAM others have already reported on.

NOT COMPATIBLE - Corsair Value Select PC3200 512MB from newegg.com for $84

COMPATIBLE - Crucial 512MB PC3200 (CT322476) for Power Mac G5 direct from Crucial for $93.99

Well I guess my question would be how do I know that my memory is compatible or not. I just purchased a Patriot Memory from Fry's Electronics. It is a 256 Mb 3200 DDR, 400MHz. I paid 49.95 for each stick. I installed it this morning and when I go to About this Mac it shows the extra RAM. I have not had any problems so far. So does this mean that it is compatible or not??

Thanks
B

The best solution to test the memory is to start from Apple's DVD (the one wich contain OSX/G5 installation), press option key at startup and choose Apple Hardware Test on the screen (wait some time before it appear). Then a program launch and you'll be able to do an extend test of the G5 (mother board, disk, video and ... ram).

Personnaly i've put new memory on it and had a lot of crash. The memory was detected but the Apple Hardware Test showed a ram stick had a problem.

NOT COMPATIBLE - Mushkin PC3200 dual pack of Level 2 Black memory, CAS 2-2-2. According to the specs and the Mushkin tech I talked to, this memory should work, but with the memory installed by itself the front light just flashed in succession 3 times and the G5 failed to start up. When I put the stock RAM back in along with the memory, the G5 booted, but the system only recognized the stock 512MB modules. BTW - Since Tuesday of this week Mushkin now sells 512MB and 1GB kits for the Power Mac G5, but the person I spoke with did not know if this was CL=2, 2.5, 3, or what it was. For the price the stuff should be CL=2! ($290 for 1GB kit).

It seems Apple PC3200 memory modules are NOT industry standard but require some special type of programming to work in the Power Mac G5. An Apple tech doc says the G5 accepts latencies of 2, 2.5, 3, 4, and 5, but I have yet to find any memory for the Mac that is advertised as faster than CL=3. If someone finds CL=2.5 or 2 memory, please post where you found it.

So, unlike PC2700 memory with the G4 you could purchase any memory within specs and it would work. I have purchased top-of-the-line memory within spec but it still would not work in the Power Mac G5 dual 2.0.

Anybody try Kingston's KVR400X64C3/512 in these things yet?

Ted, since this memory does not say it is for the Power Mac G5, I would avoid it like the plague. Kingston makes memory specifically for the Power Mac G5 -- see above for the post and order that it you want Kingston memory for your G5.

I read in another forum that someone tried some Kingston PC3200 memory (not sure of the model number), but it was not G5 specific and it did not work.
