Netinfo Manager

this is what DNS is for... your router/DHCP/DNS server should be handling this (I'm assuming your other systems are not Macs and therefore aren't using Bonjour).

You could also install Bonjour on your Windows systems (assuming again)

I have the same problem. With Netinfo gone in 10.5, there is no ability to set IP address for DNS translation on Local host. Apple support din't have an¥ answers for this but suggest LDAP

Any thoughts?

There is a new Directory utility. If you search Support for NetInfo there is command line to do a few things.

Do you know how to setup an alias localhost under the new Directory Utility? (e.g. 192.168.10.10 mail.myserver.local)

You can use /etc/hosts to do this.

From terminal, type:

sudo vi /etc/hosts
enter your password

And edit the file, entering IP address, then tab, then hostname

then escape, colon wq return

All good!

Thanks for the advice. However I still cannot ping the servers with SMB:// only the IP address will resolve. Does it matter where it resides within the file? I append the information at the end of the file

I can open the file, but I can not change it even though I have put in my password ( I am adm)
