Buying a refurbished desktop, possibly laptop

Dear All,

Due to the recent fires in California, my family is going to be replacing a desktop computer and possibly adding a laptop.

We would appreciate any advice. I've just started looking at ebay, Craigslist and other online sources of refurbished apples. I've also sent emails to my local usergroups.
