IMAP, Gmail and Apple Mail in Leopard

Has anyone got Gmail IMAP to work properly in Apple Mail in Leopard?

Although IMAP is still being rolled out, it's arrived on my 'spare' Gmail account so I tried it out in Mail on Leopard - with very mixed results.

I followed the official Gmail instructions here: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=77663&topic=12761

then looked here: http://5thirtyone.com/archives/862

for some additional help.

It does sort of work, but Messages don't usually appear in the InBox and setting Gmail folders to be for sent mail, deleted etc as per the second link doesn't seem to work that well.

Anyone had a good experience with this? Got any tips?

Thanks

I'm wondering about this too...am looking forward to figuring out the fix here. I didn't find out about IMAP support until after upgrading to Leopard, but Mail 3.0 is only wanting to give me the POP option...

Is there any way to get deleted messages under POP to have an effect on the actual Gmail account? I tried deleting certain ones in Mail and then emptying the deleted items folder, hoping that might cue the main Gmail account to delete those messages, but so far no luck on that either...

Thanks,

All it's doing for me is hammering my internet connection and seeming to get nowhere fast! It grabs headers okay and messages most of the time, but I would have expected it to have updated fully after all the time i've left it, and it still wants to transact God knows what (even when there is no mail activity shown, Mail.app trashes my internet connection)!

I figure i'll wait until someone works it out properly - for now its next to useless though. Small consolation, but it works great for me from a PC and Outlook!

I was able to get it to work, Martin...in Mail with Leopard.

Here's what I did...

I already had it working with that account in Mail as a POP. So I had to save my emails off somewhere else, because when I deleted that POP Gmail account, it deleted the old emails out of Mail along with it.

Then I created an account in mail by going into preferences and clicking the + button to add an account. I put my gmail address in the email address part of the "Add Account" box and hit tab. When doing that a checkbox appeared that was already checked, saying "Automatically set up account". UNCHECK that, put in your email password, and push the Continue button.

For the "Incoming Mail Server" screen, it defaults to POP. Change the dropbox to IMAP. In the user name I think you might need to add the "@gmail.com" at the end of the email address. Then press Continue.

Under "Outgoing Mail Server" screen, just leave all as-is and hit Continue.

Then on the last screen, hit "Create". It should then start importing everything.

Hope this helps...if so, please marked as "solved" 🙂

I have IMAP working just fine on both Tiger and Leopard via MAIL. As dshillis mentioned, you must manually setup the account.

Also be sure to override the outgoing server SSL port and use 993.

Mail under Leopard has undergone interface changes, so the visual setup examples used by Gmail will not be quite the same when setting up under Leopard, but should be intuitive enough to figure out.

Good luck!

I am using it. It is working pretty well. You do have to set up your account manually. Note the following recommendations from Google:

http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78892

I have a post detailing my setup here:

http://pt.withy.org/ptalk/archives/2007/11/gmailimap_on_myiphone.html

The one problem I am having with Leopard Mail is that despite setting my account to not move deleted messages to the trash, and having Show Deleted Messages enabled per:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mail/3.0/en/9911.html

When I delete a message it disappears from my InBox immediately, and there is no Undo Delete Message action available (as there used to be in Tiger Mail). The message is still available in my All Mail folder under [GMail], but I sorely miss the ability to quickly un-delete a mail message... Hope this will be fixed in 10.5.1!
