Whatever you do, *DO NOT* try running itunes during the backup! I killed the TM backup process twice doing this, plus itunes freezes and will not force quit.

Just out of interest - the LaCie's are preformatted on purchase right?

Is it possible that they are they still Fat32? (or anything other than Apple's preferred HFS+?). Thus no hard linking for subsequent backups?

I too am having the same issue with TM & a LaCie drive each time it trys to back up an error window reports "An error occurred while creating the backup directory" . Going back to CCC for the time being I think.

I'm going on 12 hours at only 8.43GB of 49.73GB backing up to a FireWire 400 disk which is very fast copying files to manually.

I cannot believe its taking this long. There are no other applications running and I have left the computer alone.

I am having the same trouble. It is just backing up remarkably slow, nowhere near the theoretical 400 mbps. Yeah, I understand it will probably never get to the theoretical amount, but still, it is ridiculously slow.

I also got the error saying that it could not complete, so only 8-9 GB is backed up. Now I am waiting for TM to do one of its hourly backups, and so far it has been Preparing for 5 minutes.

I noticed that too...my Repair Disk Permissions has become very slow since I plugged in my TM backup drive. It has been so slow that it really hasn't shown anything, and I get impatient then quit (although I give it a good 5 or 6 minutes of nothing before I quit).

Leave permissions longer, mine took upwards of 15 minutes, but did eventually work.

I am having the exact same problem, but with a WD 1TB drive. I have it partitioned for back. I keep getting the exact error message after about 2 hours. I did an upgrade rather than an A+I. Right now I am using Backup 3 to back up the system. Then I am considering an A+I. I am worried that I will have to reinstall all my other apps... including MS 04. Does anyone have any suggestions?

After some more digging in console. I have determined that the failed backup have to do with the i Life 08 suite. There is a significant error that comes up when time machine tries to back up either i Web, i DVD, i Photo, i Work 08 etc... I think this is the major problem causing time machine to crash.

I have excluded my entire applications directory with no changes

I am also having the same problem. After I installed 10.5, Time machine did 14 backups and then started reporting the same error as you. TM preferences says I have 151 of 250 GB remaining on my B/U drive. Error message says the drive cannot be found even though it is mounted and the TM sees it in the Options window.

i deleted my backup and tried again... only have about 30gb to back up and it fails with about 3.5gb remaining..

but have no idea why... except that it gives a bus error

I have had all the same problems. It seems as though the issue is related to the i work and i Life suite. Also time machine is having problems with xml.
