BEST SETUP FOR MUSIC PRODUCTION

HEY ALL

I AM NOT CURRENTLY USING A MAC OF ANY SORT, HOWEVER I WISH TO BUY ONE DUE TO THE EXTENSIVE FACILITIES AVAILABLE FOR THE SYSTEM. UNFORTUNATELY I AM A NEWBEE WHEN IT COMES TO MACS.
BASICALLY I AM WANTING A COMPUTER/LAPTOP SO I CAN CONCENTRATE ON MUSIC PRODUCTION. I HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT THE NEW LOGIC 8. CAN ANYBODY ADVISE AS TO WHAT THE BEST SOFTWARE WOULD BE (FOR RECORDING LYRICS, CREATING BEATS, MAKING SONGS IN GENERAL OF A PROFESSIONAL QUALITY) AND CAN YOU PLEASE ADVISE OF THE BEST COMPUTER SETUP TO BUY. I AM WANTING IT TO BE TOP QUALITY. IDEALY A LAPTOP FOR THE FACT I DON'T HAVE TO KEEP IT IN ONE PLACE, HOWEVER IF A LAPTOP CANT DO THE JOB, WHICH IMAC IS BEST ETC. THIS COMPUTER IS SOLELY BEING BOUGHT FOR THE PURPOSE OF MUSIC CREATION SO I WANT IT TO BE FAST AND EFFICIENT FOR THE JOB.
ANY ADVICE PEOPLE COULD LEAVE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED
CHEERS

I think by external box he means an external hard drive. Apple sells the Iomega 500GB drive for $139.95 with "free" shipping. I got mine for $129.99 at Amazon.com, and because I paid for Amazon Prime, I get 2 day shipping for free (great service if you buy a lot from Amazon, which I do). You can check out the drive on Apples Online Store web page. Here:

In fact they have it listed twice on the same page! I'm planning on using it for Time Machine, although I have no idea how much space it will take up, but I think 500GB will last a long while, even if Time Machine's a real hog.

By external box, I meant a device that you can plug a microphone/s guitar/s etc.
If you want to trigger midi from a keyboard you'll need to buy one with a USB out, or have a device that takes 5 pin midi.
Also, you might want to consider a stereo out to feed studio monitors.

Personally I've a powermac G5 with a PCI soundcard that connects via ADAT cables to a Yamaha digital desk.
I also use a MOTU Midi express box to get midi connections into the Mac.
But, that's only what I need. YOU need to figure out what you need and buy what is useful to YOU.
There are so many different devices out there, so you'll need to do loads of research!
You should start looking at magazines like "sound on Sound" to pick up what's out there and what it does.
