TiVo Desktop...Working?

I just got the capability to even use this feature with my HD tivo, and I didn't try it on Roxio before I upgraded, and I don't see anything in the Tivo Transfer program. I'd really like to know if it's just me or if it is simply not working with Leopard. That would be annoying, as Tivo just rolled out the update.

Upgraded to 10.5. Tivo Desktop does not work...the start button is grayed out and does not function. Have reinstalled Desktop several times. Queried Tivo with no reply. Looking for a fix?

Same here... my TiVo Desktop has the start button greyed out, plus my TiVoToGo has stopped transferring shows. Grrrrr.... and I can't find any mention of this or upgrades on the Roxio or TiVo sites.

My TiVo Transfer is working. I have been able to transfer a recording from one of my TiVo boxes to my Mac. The problem I am having is that only the hard-wired TiVo is showing up in my "TIVO DVRs" section of the window. The wireless TiVo doesn't show up. Any ideas?

I installed Leopard as an upgrade to Tiger and TiVo Desktop worked fine for playing music through the TiVo. Then TiVo updated their OS to 9.1 and I had problems for a day or 2: the TiVo couldn't always see my shared music. Then the problem went away.

As soon as I upgraded my Mac to 10.5.1, the TiVo tells me there was an error connecting the server as soon as I select my music under the "Music, Photos, Products & More" option on TiVo's main screen. At this time I can no longer play my music. I'm not happy.

Has anyone else seen this problem with 10.5.1? It it possible to uninstall the 10.5.1 upgrade or do I have to install 10.5 from the DVD?

Tivo Desktop works for me. I'm running Leopard and I have an HD Tivo. The desktop software vs. 1.93 will only allow photos and music from m iMac to run on my Tivo. I believe this is what is intended as the Tivo Desktop for the Mac does not allow transfers of TV programs with the HD Tivo. I believe that only works for the Series 2 Tivos. The rest works fine and the button is not greyed out in the preferences pane. It says Tivo Desktop on and there is a Stop button to be pushed.

If you purchase Roxio 8 then you can transfer tv programs from your HD Tivo to your mac via the Roxio software. You can then burn them to a DVD. They are in a proprietary format until you burn them to DVD. There is however a program called Tivo Decode manager which is standalone and will simply copy the mpg files from your Tivo to your Mac via wireless network (or wired). They are not encrypted. Then you can do whatever you want with them This works with all shows I have tried, including hi-def recordings.

I had the same problem. Tivo Desktop worked in 10.5 but once I updated to 10.5.1, everything quit working in Tivo Desktop. Tivo Transfer, however, continues to work. I have uninstalled the \library\preferences file and reinstalled but can't get Tivo Desktop to work with 10.5.1. I thought maybe 10.5.1 changed something in the firewall settings but I'm assuming Tivo Transfer would no longer work?

Thanks Simonex! You inspired me to try the firewall. When I switched the firewall off (Allow all incoming connections) TiVo Desktop works fine. Other settings stop it working. I've tried to add Tivo Desktop to the list of allowed applications (by adding the Unix program in /Library/StartupItems/TiVoDesktop and the pref pane) but this doesn't seem to work.

Transfers to the Mac from the TiVo work fine because the Mac is pulling the info from the TiVo. Probably through some very standard ports, too.

I can see in the firewall log that it is blocking TiVo Desktop, but since Apple "improved" the firewall in 10.5.1, I can't see how to enable the ports that TiVo wants. Apparently I'm supposed to resort the command-line. Looks like Leopard has only 299 improvements.

If anyone figures this out, please post! I don't want my computer hacked by leaving the firewall open.

Evidently I'm in some kind of Mac OS X twilight zone, because the strangest thing just happened:

I read the article you linked to and it reminded me that, since I re-installed TiVo Desktop, I lost my Videos tab. So I opened up the Visual Hub .dmg and ran the little TiVoGoBack Enabler. Nothing weird so far.

Then, a few minutes later, I'm greeted by a dialog box, asking: Do you want the application "TiVoDesktop" to accept incoming network connections? Of course I say Allow and now the TiVo can see my music!

Weirdly enough, I open up MS Word to paste in the picture I took of the dialog box, and I'm asked the same question but for "Microsoft Word". This must be what Vista is like.

Obviously there's some kind of bug here, stopping Leopard from asking this question much sooner than after about a week. I hope my experience helps others.

I checked the Firewall System Preference. The "TiVoDesktop" that it added to the list of allowed applications is in /Library/Application Support/TiVo. I guess if I had known that, I could have added it myself before Leopard deigned to ask me.

Yes, that worked! Thanks. One note to others, you must have the firewall set on "set access for specific services and applications." You won't get the message requesting permission if the firewall is set to "Allow only essential services."

I have two Macs (one PowerPC, one Intel) both running Mac OS 10.5.1 and TiVo Desktop 1.9.3. Since I upgraded to 10.5.1, the TiVo can't access music or photos from either Mac. It either says "A problem occurred while accessing the server" right away, or else it goes extremely slowly (taking a few minutes to load the next page of an album list, for example) for a little while before giving that error.

Both Macs have "Allow all incoming connections" in their firewall settings.

It did not work for me. My TiVo Desktop icon is not "grayed out". It shows that it is turned off. Whenever I hit "Start", it immediately turns back to "Off".

I have had this problem before and it's different from firewall issues. I fixed it by throwing away the TiVo pref panel's preferences file. It's in /Library/Preferences and/or the user's ~/Library/Preferences. The preferences file begins with "com.tivo". There should only be 1 file matching that description in each location.

Close System Preferences, throw the pref file(s) away and try to re-start TiVo Desktop. Good luck!
