I keep getting a popup message that says, "The application HPIO Trap Monitor quit unexpectedly. "Mac OS X and other applications are not affected." I can't close it out. Should I delete this dialog from Finder to get rid of it? I don't want to delete my printer software by accident.
Aren't us HP printer owners lucky (and I got mine from an Apple Store)... I found the following on an Apple support site (see next to last paragraph). I don't know if this applies to our HPIO problem.
Labeled "Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard build 9A559," the new release came just hours after the Cupertino-based company issued two minor updates to the previous full-sized build (9A527), both of which were aimed at testing the system's automated Software Update mechanism.
Developers who successfully applied both of the automatic software updates saw their version of Leopard upgraded to build 9A528d. By contrast, Friday evening's release of build 9A559 was issued as a 6.5GB web download to all Apple Developer Connection members, whether they had installed the previous builds or not.
People familiar with the new release say it contains only two known issues and may be considered the first of several release candidates, the latter of which would eventually be declared Gold Master and shipped off for duplication and retail packaging.
Of the two known issues in build 9A559, one relating to archive installs appears to be the most critical. Those people familiar with the matter say archive installs from Tiger to Leopard may fail on some Power PC systems if the user attempts to preserve their user settings. To remedy this problem, Apple reportedly suggests that users perform an upgrade install, a clean install or opt out of preserving user settings.
The second known issue affects users who have HP printers connected to their system or are upgrading from a Tiger system with an HP printer that had previously been configured. Though Apple did not specify the root of the problem, it recommended that these users perform a custom install of Leopard and de-select the HP printer drivers in the installer. The proper drivers would be delivered via Software Update following the Leopard install, the company added.
With a self-imposed October launch timeframe quickly approaching, Apple would need to declare a build of Leopard Gold Master sometime in the next three weeks in order to meet the tail-end of that deadline.
BAD INFO From Blogshrink - It was later announced that the HP Driver Update via Software Updates was really just to test the Driver Update feature of Leopard...NOT due to a defect in the drivers.
If you install the Leopard drivers they don;t have the HPIO Trap Monitor at all. Yet they still print.
Correction... The information I provided (re: deleting the Login Item) is incorrect, at least for my computer. I got that off HP's web site, but when I finally got back to my computer to try it, I discovered there is no such entry. I went to the StartupItems, but didn't find it there either. No idea where Leopard hides things.
I have just upgraded to 10.5 and I am receiving the HPIO quit unexpectedly message and I am using a HP PSC2355 I had similar driver issues when I first bought my computer and printer when Tiger 10.4 was launched.
I found it under /Library/StartupItems. Only problem i've noticed is that I am unable to scan from the 7280 directly to the computer like I used to be able to. I think the HPIO Trap Monitor does more than just monitor for ink levels on the multifunction 7280's. But sanity sometimes overrides function. Hoping the issue is fixed soon, would be nice to have a properly functioning device and not one just half way functioning. The ability to put paper in the scan feeder and have the Mac know it was in there was nice... When mine crashed the first time I did send the error report to apple using the error reporter.
So,
I am not sure what I did different, but I am running the latest HP drivers (9.5?) with my 7180 and have NO problems.
That is NOT to say all is fine. Install of the drivers was off, the HP Trap Mon DID crash at that stage, but once installed, I can print and Scan ⚠ fine (though the printer can't call 'back' the computer for now). No freezed or crashes. For some reason HP mon has given up trying to mess things up.
This is on 2 system that are fresh install, and one Archive & Install.
Of course, HP does need to come to the place and get us new drivers - but knowing HP they'll take a while......
Trap monitor or not I still keep getting that message and until I click IGNORE I can't do anything else. This never happened with Tiger. So is it a problem with the Mac's OS or something with the HP printer?
I am also having another problem as I can no longer get to an advanced menu in iPhoto 08 which enabled me to switch printing trays on the HP 3210 printer, so all I can to is print photos on letter size paper.
P.S. It is Bog shrink as in cranberry bog and shrink as in, well, shrink.
I deleted the entire folder and that worked. I deleted the entire hp folder. Then went to settings and removed the printer then added it again and I was fine.
I actually had to go to activity monitor and stop all the HP processes because I could not delete the folder with them running and then I stopped getting the messages.
I think I may have FIXED THE PROBLEM by trial and some of the things everyone else tried and found didn't work. At least the pesky (to say the least) HPIO error screen hasn't popped up for ten minutes. Other readers with the same problem, please try this and report back if it works for you

drag hpio to trash
this required me to enter my admin. password
then
woosh! a happy sound I hope since this is the first time I actually wrote a message without the error box.
P.S. Somehow my old sign-in as bogshrink stopped working and I had to re-register here, and someone mistook my first nickname for blogshrink, which is kind of cool, so I now am both - a shrink who lives on a cranberry bog and also spends time on a a few blogs.
click it and you will open yet another screen where you will see another hipo designation along with an event handler (both with a color design) and two other folders. Drag THAT hpio to the trash.
