Attaching files by dragging them to Mail icon creates two emails??

In Tiger I would always drag files to the Mail app's icon in the dock and Mail would automatically create a new email message with the file attached.

In Leopard it does that same, but it also creates an additional new email message (without the attachment). That leaves me with two messages open, one with the attachment and one without.

Has anyone encountered this? Is this a bug or a new "feature" that I can disable in preferences or something?

No idea. It's actually worse after the update or me. Now it's happening all the time, while before it happened 60% of the time. I have no extensions installed. Seems like it's forgetting it opened the first window when placing the attached file and opening another one. I don't know what was solved in the 10.5.1 update because I have a lot of problems with mail and leopard and none of them were fixed...

I'm having the same issue, which also occurs when I send a Word document directly to Mail from within Word: two message windows are created, one with and one wihout the attachment(s). Also, if I begin typing in the "To" line before the attachment has loaded into the message window, the cursor jumps from "To" to "Subject" and only the first letter of the recipient's address appears in the "To" line, followed by a comma. I also noticed that I consistently have to Force Quit Mail when I want to shut down or restart my computer. These problems only seem to have started after I installed 10.5.1. It's obviously another bug, and for the time being I'm moving back to Entourage Mail... Apple, please take note!

Same thing happens here - only there´s more to this bug which everyone should be aware of: If I drag a file from Finder to Mail icon in Dock, Mail opens and creates two windows. I write my message in the window in front. Then I get interupted, and when I come back I need to write another message to a different recipent before I complete the first message. I use the second window for this message (convenient as it is already there...) I place a different file in this message and send it. My first message window then dissapears! Fine, I think - I´ll write it again. Only, it turns out that the recipent of my SECOND message received the FIRST message, including attachment and everthing written in the body area (not in subject area). I work with clients who discression is important - this is risky as sensitive information can end up in the wrong places!!!

Please fix this bug!!!

I don't use MailTags either, and it happens to me every time. The only thing in ~/Library/Mail/Bundles for me is Spam Sieve. I quit Mail, removed Spam Sieve from the Bundles folder, started Mail, dropped a file on the Mail icon in the Dock, and it only created on new message with the file attached. I then quit Mail, put Spam Sieve back in the Bundles folder, started Mail, dropped a file onto the Mail icon in the Dock, and it only created one message still! Woo hoo!

Let's just hope it stays fixed. (fingers crossed)

I have an AppleScript that I use to compose a 'form letter' and it demonstrates the same problem. Two message windows open, one with the content of my form letter, the other blank. I just finish the letter and then close the shadow window. I do not use Mail Tags, do use Default Folder; but as this is happening when called via AppleScript it is hard to believe Default Folder is even in the loop. I think it is just plain a bug in Mail...

My office computer has been suffering from this problem since install of leopard. I thought the culprit was Default Folder X as I uninstalled the program and everything seemed fine. Couple days later it started happening again!

Now to make things worse... my home computer started to do the same thing. Don't have hardly the 3rd party apps on that computer but still two email message windows!!!

When I first called Apple Support they were not aware of this problem. I hope more and more people are calling so they realize this is an issue!!!

When I drag a file onto the Mail's icon in the Dock, only one message window (with attachment) appears, HOWEVER.. i have an Automator workflow set up as follows

- In our purchases server, I make an order and print the receipt as a PDF in a "Purchases folder"
- An automator actions is linked to that folder as a Folder Action
- It creates a new message in mail, attaches the pdf and send an email straight to my supervisor

The problem is that when Mail opens a new mail window it actually opens 2, one with the attachment and the other without (the same problem you all are having). Strange isn't it?

The following simple AppleScript for replying to a selected message creates two message windows in Leopard, one a blank new message, the other the expected reply. Works fine in Tiger. This really needs to get fixed.

using terms from application "Mail"
tell application "Mail"
set selectedMessages to the selection
set theMessage to item 1 of selectedMessages
reply theMessage
end tell
end using terms from
