USB-MIDI driver for Casio Keyboards

Ok, I know that this question has been asked before on numerous occasions, but still there is not a single solution in sight.

About Christmas time last year I purchased a Casio Privia digital piano. I wanted to use this as a midi controller on my MBP. It wasnt until a few months later when i returned from college and finally had a chance to sit down with this instrument that i realized that the USB-midi connection was not compatible with mac. This wouldnt be such a problem if the darn keyboard had actual midi connections, but it doesnt, only the usb-midi.

Ok, so after looking for almost a year for some type of solution to this problem (other than dual booting windows, and switching back between the two), seeing as that i can no longer return the keyboard, I am left to propose some of my own ideas which i would like some input on:

1. Use a usb-midi driver from another company such as Yamaha, Korg etc. I have tried one yamaha driver that did not work and i would like to know if anyone has had any better luck.

2. Use some sort of translation program to take any input coming from the keyboard and map it to a certain midi value. This worked for my 5 button logitech mouse that had no driver support for mac. I used a program called USB overdrive to convert the signals from the mouse to manually mapped hot keys. This is essentially the same idea, or so i believe.

3. Build a driver. Does anyone even know if this is feasible, or how much work it would take? maybe Casio never released any drivers for mac because this is just a case where the 2 devices are absolutely incompatible, or maybe (hopefully) because they are just lazy; which brings me to my final most desperate plan of action.

4. Petition Casio to build us the drivers we deserve. If you are reading this post, chances are also dealing with this same, frustrating problem. Let your voice be heard in the replies, and maybe if enough people speak out we can link this thread to Casio and perhaps something will happen. Im tired of being treated like a second rate computer user because i went with a mac. Equal Rights, Dammit!

Thanks to those who reply/

First off the keyboard was given as a gift, before i bought my mac. Secondly If i was looking to shell out hundreds of dollars for a new mac compatible keyboard then perhaps the words "Looking to buy a new keyboard and would like clintbradford's opinion on the matter" would have shown up somewhere in the title. However that is not the case and my post was very specific. I would like to try to solve this problem with what i have, and seeing as how you offered no relevant help or input whatsoever to this matter i would ask you to keep off this thread.

Thanks but the problem is that I cant use a midi interface with this keyboard, it only has a usb-output, no midi-outputs. Unless you know of an interface that takes usb-midi in and has a usb out i am afraid that route is a dead end. Thanks for the suggestion though and sorry about snapping at you before. I understand you are only trying to supply helpful info.

I received this Christmas a Casio WK-110 and couldn't make it work on my MacBook Pro, with or without the Yamaha driver.

However, I decided to write my own driver, and publish it on Google Code. It turns out it was a lot easier than I thought - the sample code provided by the CoreAudio SDK worked almost instantly with my keyboard.

Here is the project page : http://code.google.com/p/casiousbmididriver

Download the binary driver, extract it, open the disk image and copy the CasioUSBMIDIDriver.plugin file into your Library/Audio/MIDI Drivers folder. Your keyboard should now work.

This driver should work for USB devices identified by 0x07CF/0x6802. It might me possible that some keyboards aren't identified by this ID, but it shouldn't be hard to create a second driver for these.

Hi

I also have had a Casio Keyboard as a present, the CTK-720. I have downloaded the drive detailed in this tread as well as the Yamaha one but no luck. The Product ID and Vendor ID are the same as has been used for the CasioUSBMIDIDriver.plugin so I was hoping that would solve it.

The drivers are all in the correct folder. Any ideas what to look for to find a solution.

Thanks

Andy

Thanks, I don't have xcode but I'll get that installed and have a go at looking at the interfaces it is using.

One additional question, if I have the Yamaha and Casio MIDI drivers added to Library/Audio/MIDI Drivers/ should I be able to see them in the Audio MIDI setup when I add a device and edit it. I get nothing in the Manufacturer and model drop down boxes.

Thanks again

Andy
