Scanners

My Canon CanoScan 8400F scanner won't work with Leopard. When I try to scan I get the following error messages: "The necessary file could be missing or damaged, or some settings are incorrect. Reinstall the scanner driver. Scanner driver will be closed." and "Failed to open driver."

I have the newest driver and have reinstalled it numerous times. I have been in contact with Canon customer service, and hopefully they can provide a driver that works.

I see from reading the posts on other threads that drivers not working is a problem not confined to this particular brand and model.

My questions are as follows:

1. Did anyone else have this or a similar problem, but fix it? How did you fix it?

2. Does anyone have a scanner that works with Leopard? What kind is it, brand and model?

Any other hints that might get the scanner working again would be appreciated.

Thanks, DHM

My Microtek 9800XL scanner also will not work with Leopard. The latest software opens but then crashes. BTW, I would NEVER recommend a Microtek scanner to a MAC user. They are terrible about supporting the Mac OS, and have yet to release a supported driver for my fairly recent scanner model that works with the Year old Intel Macs let alone for 10.5. They may never write a supported or even beta driver for Leopard for my 9800XL. >:(

Epson makes a number of good scanners and have already posted Leopard tested drivers. If I can't a Microtek driver within a few months I am going to buy an Epson.

Thank you for the info on Epson. I will look at that if Canon can't get a driver that works. So far, I have received very fast, very responsive customer service from Canon, but, unfortunately, not a working driver -- yet.

I have exhausted the email support and have been told to call tech support. Luckily, my scanner is still within the warranty period so I am still eligible for free phone tech support. That being said, I was told by the email support rep that the phone tech support only costs $9.99 and that Canon doesn't charge it if they can't solve the problem.

I just got off the phone with Canon Tech support after almost an hour and a half, and the scanner still doesn't work. The Canon tech rep's bottom line was that it is an Apple problem, not a Canon problem. They insist that their scanner driver works with Leopard. So I am going to call Apple next. Luckily I am still covered by AppleCare there too.

The scanner is being recognized by the computer (It shows up in system profiler), so at least that is not the problem.

The Canon tech rep said that she thought the problem was a permissions issue and that some part of the driver was not being installed even though the installer announces success. We tried, among other things, deleting everything related to the scanner, creating a new admin user, and reinstalling the scanner program and driver. No joy.

She said the next step was to go in as the root user, but that she had never done that before on Leopard and didn't know how it would work out. I declined.

I'm having similar problems with the Lide 600f scanner. Have had it a matter of weeks, and worked fine with Tiger.
First no driver found. Then after uninstall and install of newest software, canoscan application won't even open. Have contacted canon support.
Wish I hadn't bothered with leopard. It doesn't seem worth the trouble, as most changes seem little more than cosmetic gimmicks. Certainly nothing I had been waiting for. Should have put off the move as long as possible till all teething problems sorted out.

Well, I have a solution to the problem. It's not perfect but it does work.

It seems the hardware compatibility is not an issue. The problem is the scanner software. I found an inexpensive scanner utility program called VueScan which works with Leopard and is compatible with over 750 scanners. I installed and tested on my Powerbook using my Microtek 9800XL and it worked perfectly. VueScan's interface is not as intuitive as ScanMaker Pro (the Microtek scan software). but it's a working solution.

You can download a trial version of VueScan and get more info at http://hamrick.com/ and it's only $40.00 to get the registered program.

Hum, let me put some "nuance". I'm a registered user of Vuescan and thought that would prevent me from any incompatibility due to obsolete drivers.

It works when Vuescan uses its embedded driver.

Not when it uses the manufacturer drivers, as for my Scanjet 5550C (same for 4500C).

Unfortunaly, several installer of old HP drivers hang during installation and do not install all components.

I had to connect my scanner to the kids Mini that is still running 10.4.10, hopefully...

Apart from this, Vuescan is a great program (batch scanning, indexing etc.).

I bought Canon LiDE 70 for Tiger and Vista. Canon's idea of driver support seems to be "buy the LiDE 90 we just came out with." And I have used and own VueScan for 5 yrs now? a long time customer.

Canon publised x64 drivers for LiDE70 a year ago, when Vista was still around RC1 or even beta, and hasn't updated since (I check every month probably). So I wouldn't hold my breath.

Thanks. Unfortunately, my scanner is on the list headed: "The following Canon scanners are supported on Windows and Mac OS X, but first need the Canon ScanGear software to be installed"

Since the Canon ScanGear software is what doesn't work, VueScan probably won't work either. Still, I may try this is I can't get the scanner working any other way.

Thanks for the suggestion to connect the scanner to one that is still running 10.4.10. That is a good idea, and I may do that using my old computer before buying a new scanner.

Thanks also for mentioning that VueScan works when it uses embedded drivers, but not when it uses the manufacturers' drivers. As I said in my previous post, my scanner is in the latter category.

My model is the CanoScan 8800F and the scanning program I use that came with it is MP Navigator EX 1.0. Since I was having the same problem (as you saw in my thread), I called Canon tech support. They told me that there will be an upgrade to the program that I use within two weeks. Until then they said to try using ImageCapture, which I am and its working great... can't scan negatives though, but I guess that I will just have to wait the two weeks. I hope this helps you... I'll Post this in your thread as well.

I tried Image Capture per Canon's instructions, but that doesn't work for me. The problem with my scanner is in the driver installation rather than in the software scanning program (at least that is what the phone tech rep said). I am glad it is working for you.

On a positive note, however, if they are going to post a fix for your problem in a couple of weeks, maybe they will be able to figure out and fix mine as well. Since I cannot get through to AppleCare (on hold for 20-25 minutes this afternoon), I'll just have to wait and see. Fortunately the scanner is not mission critical.

I have the Canoscan 8600F model (also Epson 1660), so I hope someone finds a solution before I upgrade to 10.5. Has anyone tried importing scans through photoshop?

This is one reason I always wait before upgrading to a new OS. There are always incompatibilities and bugs that need time to be worked out before everything runs smoothly.
