VPN - "Send All Traffic over VPN Connection" option not working

I did a erase and install of 10.5 and after resetting up my VPN connection (connection to a Windows 2003 VPN server) I have a new problem.

When the VPN connection is up all traffic appears to be routed through the VPN connection even though the option "Send All Traffic over VPN Connection" is not selected. I can see traffic through the VPN and normal Internet traffic becomes VERY slow. Drop the VPN and everything instantly runs normally.

As far as I can tell the routing table is correct.

On 10.4 this worked fine.

Anyone else?

Yup me too. Extremely frustrating as I use vpns almost everyday and this is killing me.

And me, VPN seems to run like a 3 legged dog, which is a shame as it is the last in my list of things to check before I can go live.

If I check send all traffic via vpn and save, connect then disconnect and then uncheck it then it does seem to run a lot faster.

Still not working for me. This is ridiculous. I tried to check the box then connect then disconnec then save then uncheck then reconnect and still I cna't access the local network when connected via the vpn.

I was having the same issue, then I remembered that I am using OpenDNS for the server at work. So in the DNS tab of the VPN connection on my OS 10.5 laptop, I entered the two OpenDNS server addresses. Everything is now running smoothly. Internet even seems speedier. Go figure. In case this is the same issue you are having, the two OpenDNS servers are: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.

Same problem here. VPN is really slow. It seems that DNS is the primary cause of this - my VPN server gives me non-working DNS addresses. Adding any other DNS server (like OpenDNS) to the VPN configuration in system preferences doesn't help, as the automatically acquired addresses seem to have priority. All in all this makes VPN unusable.

Since 10.5.1 didn't fix the problem I tried Macsperts's suggestion to add DNS servers specifically to the VPN connection and it worked.

When I reconnected I looked at the DNS list and our VPN host was the first DNS. WIthout the other DNS entires I'm guessing there were no valid DNS servers to resolve my query (our VPN does not handle/forward DNS queries).

This is probably a simple question. How did you look at the list of DNS servers that you are currently using?

I'm the network admin, so I knew what they were. But if you know the external IP address for the server, you can do a Name Server lookup with Network Utility. That MAY help, unless your network admin is using a secondary Domain Name service, as I am.

Try typing "cat /etc/resolv.conf" in the terminal.
