Mini-DVI to video adapter

Connecting an 'Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter', from a imac to a TV via the s-video or composites, allow you to split up you're desktop- like having the timeline, editer window, and clip bin ect in the imacs desktop and the playback viewer on the TV (full screen). or is it simply a minor of your mac desktop to a tv / projector?
