No dual monitor on XP under Boot Camp

installed leopard, then installed boot camp. Installed xp pro and trying to activate dual monitors. The iMac has the Radeon x1600. I can get dual monitor support in Leopard, but cannot get it to work in Windows. The second monitor in the display settings shows, enable extend desk top, but the second monitor does not come on. The only way to enable this is through the windows display settings, there is no ATI software to use to try to set dual monitors.

I have the same problem, I initially had to play around for ages when I first installed Tiger to get my second monitor to work. Since upgrading to leopard I cant get it to work at all. The Ati settings occasional disappear and requires a restart to get them to return. Fine in OSX seems to be a common problem. As I haven't got £1000 to change my Adobe suite to Mac I would like to find a resolution.

Think I have the problem resolved, was able to download ATI Catalyst from the ATI website, there is a version for Boot Camp. At first had the same issue, but in the Display Manager there was a third monitor showing up, swapped that for Desktop 2 and teh second display began to work. Had to fiddle with the settings a little bit to get an acceptable screen resolution but it does work.

This solution works on a MacBook Pro running XP connected to a 2nd monitor using a DVI to VGA cable.

I downloaded the ATI driver and Catalyst program (2 downloads). After installing both programs I ran the Catalyst Control Center (CCC). CCC recognized the 2nd display (Sharp widescreen) but I would only get a black screen when that display was selected. Selecting the 3rd display in the CCC list did work. It would not work at a the higher settings but it did work when I had the MacBook Pro set at 1440x900 and the 2nd display set at 1280x1024.

The URL for the ATI drivers is http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html. From there choose "Apple Boot Camp, Windows XP." Next, choose what mac model you have. The drive page is in column view so it's easy to drill down to the driver you want.

Once you've selected your mac model in the above page you'll get to the actual page where you download the drivers. Download both the Display Driver and Catalyst Control Center files. These are windows executable files so you'll need to be in Windows to install them.

The only problem I had was when after CCC was installed I got an error message saying my .NET Framework was out of date. You can get the .NET updates thru the Windows Update program. You'll need to use the "Custom" selection in the Windows Update program.

You may want to install CCC first in case you have the .NET problem. I installed the drivers first and I wound up uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers AFTER getting CCC to work. Took about 9 restarts of Windows before I got everything to work. Installing CCC first may reduce this to 2-3 windows restarts.

Ah my fault for not scrolling down far enough (I was clicking on Windows XP Professional / Home in the top part of the screen).

Anyway have installed both and am now able to run the 23" screen at 1,440 x 900 quite happily.

Only down side that I can see now (for using projectors, etc.) is that if I go to the screen (via a KVM I have connected) after Windows has started then I need to run the CCC again and select "clone" (instead of hitting F7) but that's a small price to pay.

I am having a similar problem in windows vista on boot camp with the 1.4 drivers installed from the leopard DVD. before I installed the drivers from the DVD for the video, I could use my external monitor just fine through vista, I could have the lid of my laptop closed and just use my big monitor. well as soon as I installed the video driver through boot camp it will only let me mirror my display or extend it through the video options provided in windows. So naturally I tried to download a different driver and roll it back or even the catalyst control center and had no luck, the drivers just didnt work. anyone have any advice?
