New MacBook Pro & Leopard - Airport Connection problems

Just upgraded to a new MacBook pro and Leopard. Every time the computer is switched on or comes back from sleep, the airport internet connection is lost.

When I try to reconnect to the network from the airport icon at the top of the screen all i get almost straight away is a 'connection timeout' message.

The only way to establish connection again is through system preferences/network/assist me/diagnostics.

I did not have any problems on my previous macbook and tiger with this connection.

It's pretty spurious. MBPro C2D upgraded to Leopard this weekend. Router is Linksys WRT300N. Works fine when going wired. Try to go wireless and it works only some of the time. Doesn't seem to be consistent. Sometimes if I turn off Airport and turn it back on it works. Sometimes it doesn't. I had Firewall set to refuse all networking connections. Thought that might be it. So I set it to accept all connections. Still the same.

Also have an Airport Express upstairs on a separate wire. Used to be able to pick up either one. Now it won't even show the second wireless router. Both use WPA networking with MAC address security. Both used to work just fine under Tiger, coming in and out of sleep mode. Now I just see the Linksys one and have trouble connecting to it wirelessly most of the time.

Wireless seems to be a bit borked under Leopard. Hopefully it'll get fixed soon.

I think this is a problem that carried into 10.5 from 10.4.10. I strongly suspect this is a software/driver issue because Airport worked well with 10.4.9. What is frustrating is the lack of support from Apple on the issue. How long has 10.4.10 been out without a fix? This should be a priority for them to resolve.

i have this issue aswell infact if you run through the Assest me ---> Diagnostics and rejoin your network this way it will stay connected until your machine goes to sleep or reboots, the so called "Keychain & Login" updated dident even remotely fix the problems like it has been proclaimed to.. i think this is a driver incompatibly
i myself did a upgrade from tiger i have read where a user did a clean install and
produced the same error apple may have to revamp the airport driver from what i read and i may be wrong or skimmed over any article but it semes that this issue only occurs in core 2 duo systems and from what ive read in that area is that there is a specfic airport chipset in the C2D and most likely apple needs to revamp the driver to better support this specfic card

I posted this in another thread this morning.

Has anyone tried this fix. I don't have access to my MBP right now to try myself.

1. Go to Finder > Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences
2. Pull SystemConfiguration folder onto the desktop
3. Restart
4. Go System Preferences > Network
5. Select “New Location” under the Location drop down menu and give it a name

6. Select “Airport” under the show drop down menu
7. Go to By default, join: and you can leave it on automatic or with preferred networks and select or add your network
8. Click “Apply Now” and all should hopefully be golden
9. If all is good, trash the folder on your desktop

I found it here:

I am having the exact same problem. I use a new wireless N linksys router, with a WEP key.

As you say, everytime it goes to sleep, it will not reconnect. I have done 3 "Erase & Install's". I have also reset my router to factory default and set it back up twice. I still have the connectivity problem. I have concluded that it has to be a bug in the software, or the Keychain update that was installed after upgrading.

I plan on calling tech support and informing them. You would hope they read this stuff. I never had any issues with Tiger connecting after Sleep. I guess the good news is that we are not alone in this problem.

Based on your response it makes me think that it has something to do with the WEP key. I bet it has alot to do with the Keychain update. If the Apple store has open network, it doesn't need to send a WEP key to access a network. Hence everytime the Book sleeps, when it's woken up, it needs to resend the key to access the router, which it's not doing because of the Keychain update. What do you think?

Just wanted to add a note that I'm having the same problem. MacBook Pro was working fine with my Linksys wireless router, until I installed Leopard. Now it's completely random - it works sometimes, 5 bars of signal sometimes, 2 bars other times, or no bars. Most of the time I can't ping the router. Sometimes I get a self-assigned IP address even when there's a strong signal, and in this state I can't ping the router.

Hoping for a fix soon!

I did a fresh install on my 2gz Macbook and any time I close the lid the airport will not work after i open it again. I turn it off and back on again, still no luck. The only way to get wifi back is to reboot the machine.
Also, I can not browse my shared places or find a shared printer. BOTH of these were working perfectly before 10.5, Leopard is seeming more and more like eye candy, instead of substance.
