Endless disconnecting of Bluetooth mobile phone data connection

Hi,

if a data connection with my BT mobile phone unexpectedly drops, the system endlessly tries to disconnect the (already disconnected) connection.

This bug is well known in 10.4. A workaround was to manually kill the PPPD process (or alternatively with a 3rd party script (EndHangingDisconnect)).

It seems, that this workaround does not help in 10.5 anymore. Any other solution? Which process is responsible for this bug in 10.5 (and could be killed).

However, I am very disappointed, that this highly annoying bug was not addressed by Apple with this update.

Hi Guys,

Try this solution, it worked for me:

1) Open Terminal

2) Type this:
ps -ef | grep pppd

This will return the process ID. My sample result is as follows:

0 1452 34 0 0:00.04 cu.Bluetooth-Modem 0:00.10 pppd serviceid 1CE91375-4750-46CA-9C06-9B04AE4CEA09 controlled

3) 1452 is my pppd process ID.
I will then send a "Hang-up" signal to it as follows:

kill -HUP 1452

4) Viola! The irritating "Disconnecting.." status should now be gone!

Cheers,
Brandon Teo

The problem is that the pppd process is unkillable. So, the solution you propose will not help in the cases described here.

By the way this is not fixed in 10.5.3. I'm seeing this same issue with a Nokia 6120 on 3 Australia.

I must say that I'm getting a bit disappointed with Apple. First the endless problems with WLAN/WPA and now they also have serious problems with Bluetooth connectivity. All of which has been well documented but not fixed in several revisions of the OS.

Me 2...

If this train had windows that open I would no longer have a Nokia... Highly frustrating. Connected via USB right now and that works BUT each time I have to reinstall my Nokia N95 8 GB in Network Settings!

I wish I still had my SonyEricsson....

PS. i'm on swedish 3 - seems to be alot of 3-clients here, coincidence?

This bug is very frustrating since it's been creeping since Tiger and now it happens on a daily basis.

I have submitted the following bug report via bugreport.apple.com, it usually gets things fixed much faster:

Summary: if a data connection with my mobile phones unexpectedly drops, the system endlessly tries to disconnect the (already disconnected) connection and I can't restart it.

Steps to Reproduce: Using the modem connection on a daily basis

Expected Results: The pppd connection should disconnect properly and let me restart a new one.

Actual Results: as mentioned in the summary, if a data connection with my mobile phones unexpectedly drops, the system endlessly tries to disconnect the (already disconnected) connection and you can't restart it

Regression: always occurs

Notes:

The following devices have this problem:

USB Huawei E220
Nokia N82 Bluetooth Modem
Nokia E71 Bluetooth Modem
Nokia E61 Bluetooth Modem
Sony Ericsson K810
Sony Ericsson K850
Samsung phones

Killing pppd doesn't work.
Killing pppd with -9 KILL doesn't work.

The only way to get rid of this problem is to reboot the system and shutdown will take forever to complete.

This problem already started since Tiger and is affecting many users as you can see
in this threads...

The link given here recommends installing a widget and then disconnecting the bluetooth device in the widget TWICE to stop the "diconnecting..." hangup. Actually, it works for me without this widget, when I just click on "Diconnect" in the menu bar TWICE. Good idea, funny it took me months and months to find this out. Very frustrating that this bug persists.

On that note, I went through the instructions at https://www.nokiausa.com/A41163051 again and setup the bluetooth internet access again and now the device connects to the internet without problems or hangups. It's a mystery.

The connection is incredibly slow, but I suppose that this is another issue, possibly related to Vodafone.de.

If've the same issue with my nokia phone and after some disconnects it's impossible to connect again. Yes the reboot workaround is working for me as well - but it is annoying!!! Is this an Apple-Fault or Nokia?

BTW.: I found another workaround - Annoying as well but not that annoying compared with a full system reboot.

Simply create a new Location within the Network-Settings-Page. Ok you have to setup you MobilePhone again; but its working without a full reboot. 🙂

Me too. MacBook Pro, 10.5.6 and Nokia E71.

Neither Bluetooth nor USB modem seem to work work. I only see the endless disconnecting message (kill -9 does not work either, I must reboot to reset the pppd)...

With 10.4 it was not this bad: the USB modem worked without problems and the Bluetooth modem connected at least occasionally.

It seems that the only way I can get my phone to act as an modem with 10.5.6 is to use the JoikuSpot software (which costs 15 euros 😟 ).

This is frustrating - I should not need to by extra software to compensate for buggy Apple/Nokia software...
