3GB installed, only 2GB reported

I have a 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, which came installed with 2GB RAM. Its documentation indicated it could be upgraded to 3GB RAM (i.e., it's not one of the original models that maxes out at 2GB). I just installed a 2GB stick to replace one of the original 1GB sticks. It boots fine, but only recognizes 2GB (shown in About This Mac..., System Profile and Activity Monitor).

I understand a pair of 2GB sticks would perform slightly better, but using 1GB + 2GB should still work and be detected as 3GB.

The memory I installed is the Patriot PSD22G6672S DDR2 2GB PC5300 SO-D PAT, and I have tried it in both Bank 0 and Bank 1, but either way, System Profiler shows 1GB in each bank (for both the 1 and 2 Gig sticks).

Can anyone help me understand what's going on? Thanks!!
