EPSON Printer Utility Hangs

I have an EPSON Stylus Photo R200, and am running OS X 10.4.2 and am trying to run the EPSON Printer Utility to determine which ink cartridges I am out of. Now I can still print, but I am obviously missing ink. I have run Diskwarrior 3.0.3 and repaired my Permissions multiple times now to no Avail. The Utility Hangs while trying to find printers. I was recomended to try Printer Setup Utility, but I don't trust it, as it once screwed up an old computer of mine.

I have removed the printer, and reset it up with the epson driver once again, and am still having the same problem.

I had the same problem I couldn't even get the Epson Utility to Force Quit. Contacted Epson and here is text of their response and it works. There is more to it than just deleting the Epson Printer drivers from the Library. That worked for me for a while but this seems to be more permanent.

Hope this helps.

"Your printer uses resident drivers which have been built into 10.4 itself.
These drivers are the most current available as of the release of OS 10.4
and support all the functions that they had in 10.2 and 10.3, however they
need to be added properly in order to work correctly for you. (No downloads
or "updates" are required as these drivers are now resident within the OS.
If a CD or downloaded driver has been installed, a mix of files will be
present and the driver may not work properly.)

Please follow the instructions below to completely remove and reinstall the
resident Epson driver package for your printer. You can leave the printer
on and connected throughout.

REMOVE FILES

1. Double click on the MAC HARD DRIVE.
2. Double click on the LIBRARY folder.
3. Double click on the PRINTERS folder.
4. Drag the EPSON folder to the trash can.
5. Close any open windows.
6. Double click on the MAC HARD DRIVE.
7. Double click on the LIBRARY folder.
8. Double click on the RECEIPTS folder.
9. Delete any "Epson" receipts.
10. Close all open windows and restart your computer.

REINSTALL THE EPSON DRIVER PACKAGE

1. Insert your Mac OS X 10.4 Install disc. Open CD when it appears on the
desktop.
2. Find and double-click on the Optional Installs.mpkg.
3. After the installer opens, choose the following custom install options:
-Check "Printer drivers" and use arrow next to this entry to expand this
category.
-Check "Epson" below the "Printer drivers" heading. (You do not need to
install other manufacturer's packages.)
4. Click "Install" and follow prompts to reinstall the resident Epson
printer driver package. Restart the computer after installation is
complete.

READD THE PRINTER

1. Go into HD > Applications > Utilities and open the Printer Setup
Utility. The "Printer List" window appears.
2. Highlight and delete any existing references to your Epson printer. (If
you want to be thorough and do not have any other printers on the Mac,
choose "Printer Setup Utility" from the top of the screen and "Reset
Printing System". Confirm resetting the system. This clears any existing
printer entries and queues. If you have other printers on the Mac and use
this reset, you will need to readd them later.)
3. Click ADD. Printer Browser window appears. (At this point your Epson
printer must be on and connected.)
4. Highlight the desired Epson printer model and click the MORE PRINTERS
button at the bottom of the window. (Do not change any other fields.)
5. A window now opens which is identical to 10.2. and 10.3, where you can
select EPSON USB (for a USB cable connection) or EPSON FIREWIRE (for a
firewire connection) at the top of the screen. Highlight your printer's
name and select Page Setup "ALL" below, then hit ADD to return to the
Printer List with all available printer/layout options now showing. (If you
are unable to see the full description under "Kind" you may need to expand
the Printer Setup Utility window or extend the "Kind" column to make this
visible.)
6. Make the printer name/layout option you wish to use default in the
Printer Setup Utility before closing it. For example, if you plan to do a
borderless print, ensure the printer name showing "(Sheet feeder -
Borderless)" under "Kind" is set as the default printer here. Then, when
you have opened a photo and are ready to print, go to File > Page Setup and
File > Print in the program you are printing from and ensure that the
specific printer/layout option you want to use is also selected as
"Printer" or "Format for".
