Bose Companion 5 Speakers and Leopard?

There seems to be an issue with Leopard and the Bose Companion 5 multimedia speakers. iTunes is playing just fine and was browsing through Time Machine and the music stops. This has happened a few other random times also and is not tied to one application.

Go into system profiles and check to find that the speakers have been set to the internal speakers and not the Bose. Unplugging the USB cable and power to the Bose does not work. You have to reboot then go select the Bose to get you audio output set back from the internal speakers to the Bose.

Is there a new driver for the Bose Companion 5 speakers?

yes, I just confirmed the problem. For me it happens when I am listening to iTunes and I go into Time Machine, the music stops, or you think so anyway. When you go look into it you find that the system has really switched to the internal speakers.

I have found that if you unplug the Bose, wait about 1 minute, plug back in and let the system discover them again, then in system pref's -> sound -> choose the Bose again and they start playing..

Yes, this is a pain...

FYI I am having the same problem. iMac 2.8 Ghz, 4GB RAM, Bose Companion 5. Plugged into USB ports on computer. The sound just stops and I have no idea why... and it only comes back if I unplug and replug the Bose, or reboot the computer.

This is definitely a weird bug. I am going to email Apple about it, and I suggest you do the same.

This is NOT just a leopard issue. I'm running 10.4.11 and noticed it just started happening. Currently I have my speakers plugged into a USB expansion port. I was going to see it plugging it into one of the ports on the back of my MacPro made any difference. It is strange as it was working fine before. There was a raft of upgrades I downloaded and installed, both for OSX and other apps so it is difficult, if not impossible, to tie it to a specific app upgrade. Currently the only way to fix it is a reboot. I'll try the "wait a minute" trick. I'd like to not have to reboot.

Thought I'd add 2cents more. I'm curious to those who have posted above where there is a problem, what other, if any, USB devices do you have on your system? Since I am running Tiger, I don't use Time Machine but I just added a Logitech Keyboard and mouse to my MacPro. I'm wondering that for those of us who are having a problem, are we all using one or more very active USB peripherals that may be causing the conflict. And to that point, are the people listed above who say that they are not having a problem, do they only have Companion 5 speakers as the only heavy USB port devices?

I have the same problem believe it or not... I have Bose Companion 5 speakers and iTunes/all sound on my computer will randomly stop working. Usually it stops working when I open IE or have any other program open other than the plain desktop. I'm on Windows Vista with the latest iTunes.

The oddest thing is, the computer thinks the speakers are still playing. I'll go into the sound tab and I'll see the green bar for my Bose speakers still moving up and down to the music. However, no sound plays. If anyone knows how to fix this, please advise.

Add me to the list. My Companion 5's are being lost periodically, since I upgraded to Leopard about a week after release. I have not figured out if there is any specfic scenario where the speakers are lost. It really seems to be at random. For me, disconnecting the USB cable has not worked. The only thing that will work is to power down the speakers, reconnect them, then I can reconfigure my audio MIDI settings. I just finished sending an e-mail on the feedback link.

My other peripherals are a Lacie 160GB firewire EHD, HP printer/scanner, & heavy use of an iPod, so I simply keep the iPod's USB cable connected to the computer. My mouse & keyboard are both Apple wireless.

Well, I found a fix that at leasts works for me. I have LOTS of USB connections to my MacPro. Both of my Dell monitors are USB hubs plus I have an additional USB hub under my desk to expand the ports even more for printers, cameras, etc. Anyway, long story short I had my Companion 5 plugged into one of my hubs instead of being directly plugged into my MacPro. I found that when I rearranged my USB pluggs so I could plug the Companion 5 directly into my MacPro the problem has gone away. I've tried a few things that broke it every time in the past (booting up a parallels session) or multiple sound devices and I've not a problem since. In theory, I should not have to do this but I'm guessing there is some latency issue in going through a hub. Just enough to wack the USB driver in OSX such that it looses the Companion speakers.

Anyway, thought I'd pass this on.

This will not help my situation as my Bose speakers have been always directly connected to my G5 through one of the USB ports. I have alternated the ports & still no joy.

I did talk to Bose support on Monday afternoon. They have no previous reports of problems with Leopard. I walked the Bose tech support guy on the phone to teh 2 threads in the Leopard forum that discuss this issue & he was pretty shocked. He said that he would absolutely forward this information, including what has been posted in AD, on to the appropriate tech support, engineering people at Bose. We agreed that I would check back after the first of the year to see if any progress has been made on a fix. I will keep this thread updated when I find out anything.

I have 10.4.11 on my computer and the Bose Companion 5 has been plugged directly into the computer's USB, and I am having the same issue. The speakers stop working suddently, and sometimes when I restart the computer they make a terrible sound while rebooting. This is happening for a couple of weeks already and I also have the feeling is after the latest upgrades. I went to the Apple store today and they didn't have any idea that this problem was happening. I actually bought Panther hopping it will fix something, but for what I read here it does not look like it. HELP, HELP!!!
