Using VNC

Hello,

Sorry for the question, I never used the VNC option before and would like to remote control my macbook from a PC. What version of the VNC viewer can I use? I have tried 4 and it wants to Protocol 3.3 is this correct?

I know something is happening, if I input the wrong password I get an error. After I input the correct password I get a quick window that disappears and nothing. Firewall is off.

Any hint would be appreciated.

Thanks

Steve

I'm having a similar problem. I've used the regular VNC client from the vnc website and UltraVNC. You get the "quick window" if you set the resolution to anything but the "highest resolution". This works great if you are on the same network, but across the internet it's just to slow. If you just want to control it from the same network try setting the resolution to the highest setting in the client. I'm still researching this to see if I can find a fix.

I've been able to connect to Screen Sharing on 10.5.1 with both TightVNC and UltraVNC from Windows XP. With both clients however, I can't reduce the number of colors used or the session will automatically disconnect. If appears that Screen Sharing in Leopard only allows full color, which makes it pretty slow across the internet. I have also seen some discussion about Screen Sharing requiring a password to be set in Preferences for either of these clients to connect.

Hope some of this helps.

My attempts to connect to Leopard server using RealVNC, UltraVNC, and TightVNC from an XP laptop (Dell D430) all return incompatible version errors. I would prefer not to install additional software on the XServe. I can use my powerbook to manage most of the time, but need the Windows laptop for business travel. Any chance you can share the successful configurations?
Thanks, Greg

Using TightVNC, make sure you select "High-speed network" when entering the connection information. It's slow (unless you've got a great 'net connection at home) but it seems like the only way.

Using Ultr@VNC, select the "ULTRA" quick option when entering connection information.

Using RealVNC viewer, when entering connection information click on "options" then select "Full" under "Colour level".

Thanks for your suggestions. Unfortunately, I am still unable to connect from the PC to the Leopard Server. I can connect to a tiger server.

I previously purchased RealVNC Personal Edition so I tried your suggested settings with that.
I first receive an error stating the server is non-standard, obtain a copy of RealVNC server or use protocol 3.3 option to disable this warning. When I change the options to use protocol 3.3 only I get an error stating incompatible version, do you wish to reconnect to .... Yes starts an endless loop of the same message, No closes the software.

edit... the RealVNC viewer I am using is the latest available 4.3.2

What is the exact error, is there an error number? I used to have VNC working on my firt gen 20" Intel iMac CoreDuo running Leopard 10.5.2 but know on my new 3.06Ghz iMac with Leopard 10.5.2 I cannot connect to VNC.

When I use the VNC Network Test website http://www.realvnc.com/cgi-bin/nettest.cgi

I get an error that I can't remember as I’m at work right now but it does successfully find VNC and connects on port 5900 but can't return the version of VNC.
