iTunes won't open

Hi everyone 🙂

About a month ago my iTunes stopped working. I was using the latest version and it worked just fine. One day there was a new update available (the newest one I believe), I downloaded it, installed it but when I tried to open the program, it didn't open. About ten seconds after I clicked the icon, it said that iTunes had to be closed. I sent the error report but it's happened like that every single time I try to open it. I unistalled that version and installed the one I was using previously, and still the same. I tried with the iTunes setup that comes in the CD with my iPod, and still the same problem. I just tried with iTunes version 6.0.5, and still the same.

Could someone please tell me how to fix this? :s

let's first check to see if this is associated with a problem with your QuickTime. (iTunes needs a properly functioning QuickTime in order to work correctly.)

try launching your QuickTime. does it:

(a) launch perfectly fine?

(b) fail to launch with an error message? (if so, what does it say?)

(c) exhibit other peculiar behavior? (if so, could you describe it for us?)

When I try to open Quicktime, a window pops up that says Windows is preparing the installation and configuring the installation. Here's a screenie:

It's in Spanish but it says: "Wait while Windows configures Quicktime"

It's like an installation wizard or something :s

Right now I'm downloading the newest Quicktime installer (just Quicktime, not iTunes). I think if I run it it will give me the option to fix the one that's currently installed? o.o

ok folks for some reason windows xp has an update error which is causing itune to freeze up..this is cuased by security update 925902 (MS07-017) and security update 928843 (MS07-008)..if you recently updated your windows XP Operating system most prog wont work like they suppose to..to Fix it
go to "control panel"
go to "add/remove programs"
now check the "show update" box to reveal the enemies
now uninstall:
security update kb925902
security update kb928843

just go ahead and uninstall these jerks...they are suppose to help your PC but they arent..hey let me know if it works now..thanx

ps this also works for this error:

"Illegal System DLL Relocation"

Hmmmm. If that was iTunes (rather than QuickTime) I'd be saying "That's the setup assistant running", but it's a bit more rare to see it happen with QuickTime.

Try downloading the Standalone QT installer (The one that doesn't include iTunes). If you've got a QuickTime installed at the moment, then running that should give you the "Repair" option (as well as the remove).

I ran the recently downloaded Quicktime only setup and clicked on Repair. Everything was fine for the first minute, the files were being copied with no problem, but then an error message popped up:

"Error writing on the file C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\QuickTimeStreaming.qtx. Make sure you have access to that directory."

With the Retry and Cancel options. I clicked on Retry but nothing happened.

Aaand as I suspected, I can't erase that file. I think it's the source of my problems >.>

That's what i'd like to know. My friend also has Windows Vista and also has the problem of iTunes not opening up anymore. He only gets a message saying that iTunes cannot be opened and then only has the choice of closing it and wait till Microsoft has found a solution for his problem.
So I'm going to keep a close eye on this thread for a solution.

Good lord. Things suddenly seem a bit clearer.

Let's first check to see if that message (and the QT launch message) are both associated with disk damage near that file, by running a chkdsk over the C drive:

How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP

Does the Chhkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, does QuickTime either start launching again, or at least repair properly? If so, does iTunes start launching again properly for you?

I ran chkdsk on my comp. It said it couldn't read some registries but it still found some errors and deleted two files: ipodServicelozalized.dll and ipodSe~1.dll. After that, I tried to repair Quicktime and it worked! I ran the program and it was all good. But I didn't have iTunes installed, so I looked for a setup of iTunes alone (without Quicktime), but I guess there isn't any. I downloaded iTunes version 7.4 (with Quicktime included) and installed it... And again, it wouldn't open and Quicktime's installation wizard launched again when I tried to open it, and it couldn't be repaired.

So I'm gonna run chkdsk again, but what do you suggest for next time? Should I uninstall iTunes now, and after I run chkdsk try to install it without repairing Quicktime first? Or should I leave both installed, run chkdsk and then just try to open iTunes?

I was so close to being able fix it T_T

Hello all,

i recently updated my itunes(itunes 7.5) and since then i've only used it once. FDrom that point forward everytime i attempt to open itunes a message comes up stating "itunes has encountred a problem and needs to be closed. Please tell microsoft about this problem by sending an error report" I believe that i have sent over 40 error reports to no avail. I have uninstalled and reinstalled from both the disk that came with my ipod video and also the update on the apple website. My quicktime works fine. I have a windows xp pro system. Any ideas??

Please help!!

Cheers, Meh12c
