Setting up Administrator Account

New MacBook. New to Macs. Have only one account on Computer, but it does not have "administrator" privileges. Go into system preferences - accounts to try to set administrator privileges, but told I need these privileges to add them to my sole account. Have not set an administrator name and password -- and there is no indication (except denial of access) that such an account exists.

Used install disk and c key as per instructions to reset administrator password but this will only reset existing (non-administrator) account password.

Please help. Currently feel like screaming and buying a new PC.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5)

welcome to macbook forum.

if you open your system preference / account / at the left side it should be your user name and it should said Admin at the bottom, and you are the administrator. Just click parental control tab, and it will said : you cannot turn on for an administrator user or a network account.

Even in user with admin right, it will asked password if you want to modified or install something for security purpose.

And if you want to add user, just click the + sign under that. and here is link about manage the user:

Hope that will help.

And please do not threat us by pointing "fell like screaming and buying a new PC".
We gladly help you without you have to say that and honestly we are tired of getting that threat and we don't care if you want to return your macbook and switch back to PC.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the assistance but doesn't work There is only one account listed under system preferences/account -- under the head "my account" -- it is designated "standard" not administrator (is that significant?).

Can't unlock anything with that account name and password -- just get an error message saying I need to have administrator access.

Not a threat! an expression of frustration...

Ok, let start over,..

did you get this set up by yourself or somebody set this account up for you. because if you are the only user during installation / macbook setup, it should be automatically become admin.

if somebody else set this one up for you, asked the user name and password and login as her or him and add your privilage under their login.

and when you try to reset password, did you reset them properly, because you can reset all password from here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh655.html

Good Luck.

In addition to my previous post.

on system preference / account, do you have any other user underneath your standard user that act as admin.

if you have, try to login as that user after you manage to reset the passwordand reboot, or click on that locked sign, and type that user and new password (or blank) if you manage to change or reset that to blank.

Good Luck.

Yes. I have had the same problem since upgrading to OSX 10.5 and at the same time getting a new Macbook pro. I transfer the data from former 17 inch powerbook where I was admin. and now...the Macbook pro do NOT have me as the admin.

This had been frustrating. I too have my user name in and it says "Standard" below it.

I am not sure if this is related to the issues posted regarding people logging in (with difficulty) under OS 10.5.

Ideas?

Thanks,

Trisha
