Since Leopard, Mac keeps losing Airport connection

Since I installed Leopard, my PowerMacDualG5 keeps losing its connection to the Airport Extreme network. The signal-strength indicator in the top bar suddenly and unpredictably, but very frequently goes gray. I can reestablish the connection by going to that indicator, pulling down the menu, turning Airport OFF, and then immediately turning it back ON. As I type, here, it's gone gray again. I hope I can manage to post this message.

This never happened before Leopard. My MacBook Pro 17", also Leopard-equipped and operating off the same Airport Extreme in the same room, shows no sign of such a problem.

I am having the exact-same problem. I've updated two powerbook G4's and both of them have problems staying connected to my Airport. My PC's and remaining un-updated mac stay connected with no problem.
Of course, it's nearly impossible to reach anyone in Customer Support. I've tried for two days and Apple's support line tells me there are no reps available and to call back later!.... very frustrating!

I have the same issue. The fastest way to re-connect is the exactly like you said. My PowerMac Dual G5 2.3 started have problems as soon as I installed Leopard. I thought it was the ISP until I noticed that my network kept disappearing when I checked the signal strength indicator after the connection was lost.

My PC laptop and my Palm don't seem to lose their connection with the Airport. I don't use them as much on so I'll keep checking.

Apple please help with this ASAP before my wife turns against Mac OS and starts using the PC more.

I've also got this problem.
I live in another house then the actual access point, but before the upgrade there were no problems with the connection. Even though i'm inside the house i have problem, there's a 20-30% packet loss, even though i've got 90% signal strength.

Even though it worked perfect before the upgrade i've done some investigation of the network. I found an old thread on macosxhints.com[0] were alot of people had problems with d-link routers. I'm using a netgear wgr614v7, but some of the hints in the thread actually help. Changing the router to run in 802.11g mode only made the connection when i'm in the main house much better. But on the other hand i don't get a signal at all out in my house.

I've also made sure that there are no other wireless networks on the same channel as mine. There are 2-3 other networks but they're using channel 1 and 11 (mine is as 6). There hasn't been added any new equipment in the house that could interfere with the wlan.

So, to summarize, i started getting problems after the upgrade. Just minutes before when i was running "tiger" it was all good.

After the mandatory interminable wait, I spoke with Melissa at APL-CARE, and we spent about an hour fixing the problem. Ultimately the solution was to restart in safe mode (hold down the shift key during startup), which apparently clears the system's throat, expelling accumulated garbage that I don't pretend to understand in detail. Then, after a regular restart, the Airport connection was finally stable for the first time under Leopard.

One thing we tried that DIDN'T do the job was to go into System Preferences/Network, then in the little wheel-menu at lower left to resequence the "services" with "Set Service Order," so that Airport became the first thing the system would try to connect to. Sounds logical, but it left the instability intact.

Booting into safe mode did not help me either.

But, it did help to remove the battery and hold down the power button for >10 seconds! I'm writing this from my house (see my other post in this thread).

The above tips is kind of hard if you don't have a laptop. Not really sure what it does and if you can do something equally on a stationary computer.

Also getting this (very frustrating) issue. At first I thought it may be interference from other routers, but it looks like that isn't the case.

Something I tried today which dropped the frequency of the random disconnections was to change the Airport channel to something other than automatic (in my case, 13). However a proper fix on this would be nice. 😟

Guess I spoke too soon: it's dropping out again. Much less frequently than before, but the fix in which I invested my morning (and that of a couple of helpful Apple folks) turns out not to be the entire answer. That is, you might still wish to try the safe-mode restart: it might help. But the problem's still there. Alas.

Apple, PLEASE take note!

Same problem here btw. I sent in the feedback form already. Did anyone notice that this is the exact same thing that the iPhone does with the signal? The difference w/ the iPhone is that you get ping-ponged between lazy worthless techs at Apple and AT&T regarding who's problem signal issues are. The issue remains, just like this you can have the phone sitting on a table and the signal will fluctuate between no bars and full signal. I'll be sitting on the couch and talking, and the signal will go in and out, sometimes drop, and sometimes be full. This might be a fundamental Leopard issue, since the iPhone seems very leopardish.

I'm having similar issues. Everything worked perfectly on my Mac Pro until I recently upgraded to 10.5. Now I'm seeing a consistent 37-50% packet loss with my Airport Extreme Base Station.

Interestingly, my MacBook Pro and my wife's iMac and MacBook are both at 0% packet loss (some with Leopard, MacBook not yet).

Here's the ping results I've had in some testing (and yes, I've rebooted, gotten rid of my DHCP with static IP, etc. - even though that should be irrelevant).

--- 192.168.0.1 ping statistics ---
265 packets transmitted, 139 packets received, 47% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 0.624/1.013/4.437/0.629 ms

--- 192.168.0.191 ping statistics ---
187 packets transmitted, 135 packets received, 27% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 0.631/1.044/18.598/1.621 ms

==========================

Mac Pro results:
--- 192.168.0.1 ping statistics ---
142 packets transmitted, 70 packets received, 50% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 0.610/1.133/5.724/0.858 ms

iMac results from same time-frame:
--- 192.168.0.1 ping statistics ---
160 packets transmitted, 160 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 0.626/2.302/176.901/13.881 ms

After reboot:
Mac Pro results:
--- 192.168.0.1 ping statistics ---
116 packets transmitted, 65 packets received, 43% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 0.609/1.548/31.052/3.766 ms

===================
After switching from dynamic DHCP with static address I get:
--- 192.168.0.1 ping statistics ---
70 packets transmitted, 70 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 0.612/1.000/4.032/0.626 ms

--- 192.168.0.1 ping statistics ---
141 packets transmitted, 141 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 0.620/1.028/7.372/0.892 ms

After several more minutes on dynamic DHCP only I start seeing:
--- 192.168.0.1 ping statistics ---
106 packets transmitted, 18 packets received, 83% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 0.616/0.817/2.841/0.504 ms

This is INSANE. How in the world am I supposed to work with a 17% throughput?!

PLEASE fix this Apple - ASAP!
