Best format for importing cds to iTunes?

Hello. I just got my iMac and wanted to start rebuilding my music library. I am wondering what is the best format to use when importing cds into iTunes. I would like to use as little disk space as possible while still having the songs be versatile in the case that I would want to burn them on a cd and have them played in a standard cd player. Any advice?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.

It does depend on what device(s) you intend on playing the music on.

For storage on hard disk and burning to CD later using AAC at 128kbps would be a good compromise. There is some quality loss but my ears can't tell the difference. Why not import the same file a couple of times and try for yourself.

For AudioBooks you can use a much lower bit rate and the quality is still acceptable.

cheers
