ATI 9600 Pro card and Leopard?

Hello!
I would like to know if the video drivers in leopard are better than the ATI Display software. I want to install Leopard on a G5 with Radeon 9600 Pro Mac/PC edition via a simple update, but dont know if the card will be handled right away, and if yes if I'm to install the Ati software (4.5.7 is the latest I think).
Thanx for your input...

Hopefully this will help someone else in my predicament...

I just installed Leopard on a G5 with an old ATI Rage card in it (long story) and found that HD video (x264 .mkv, etc.) was really choppy (go figure!). So I dug up the 9600 card that came with the G5 originally and swapped out the older card with this newer one. The G5 then booted though the Apple logo with the spinning gear and right when it was looking like it would go into the desktop and finish the boot process the screen would just go black.

While searching around the forums for someone else with this problem (and swapping the video cards back out so I could at least boot the G5 and try installing the latest ATI driver from their website) I noticed from another system on my network that when the G5 was running with the 9600 (and the screen was blank) it was still accessible via the network, and even more importantly available for screen sharing (yea Leopard!). So I shared the screen, seeing that it was running a super low res (that the attached DVI monitor did not support, I guess). I switched the res to a known-good setting (1680 x 1050) and suddenly the blank screen snapped to life, and all is working fine now (and HD video playback is smooth as silk!).

If I had installed Leopard with the 9600 installed in the G5 to start with I bet this would not have happened, but hey, live and learn.

Thank you, irq. The reinstall of the application from the macosx-ati-display-4-5-7.dmg the problems are gone!

I had the problem s of "pixel debris" near the mouse pointer AND the machine going into beach-ball on waking up (no response to any input except power cycle) AND Time Machine screen issues (split background - swapped, jerky movement, couldn't use it for anything, Apple case #86433168)) because of the same reasons (upgraded to the ATI 9600 Radeon PC/MAC card to support the 30" cinema displays). Now all 3 problems are solved with the reinstallation (haven't had a chance to test out TM screen fully for response since I only have the first snapshot backup now - don't ask). Interestingly, I had the ATI ROM Xtender in the right place, but still had the problem (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5705629#5705629 ) for that discussion.

When I moved the user account over from Tiger back up, the ATI display panel etc. came over to Leopard, but some items were grayed out in the SysPref ATI controls. Also, I had to use Safari to download the dmg file.

Regarding performance with the 9600 Pro and Leopard: I have a 1.6GHz G5 with the Radeon 9600 Pro. Graphics performance was dismal with 10.5.0. I upgraded to 10.5.1 and it nearly fixed all of it. Core image seems at least 2x faster, that is, minimizing windows, etc. is MUCH faster than it was before. I had the artifacts issue but I just reinstalled the original drivers from the CD and that was taken care of quickly. So, go update and report back. I'm pretty happy.

i'm hoping one of you geniuses has an answer for me too...

G5 single, Leopard, ATI Radeon Pro 9800 MAC special edition vid card, Dell 20" lcd monitor. two things happen.

one, the display will not wake from sleep. the keyboard is responsive. I can turn volume up and down, etc. but nothing will wake the monitor. can't get it to shut down though so i have to do a hard restart every time.

two, sometimes during this unresponsive sleep mode, the fans will fire up, going faster and faster till i can hear it on the other side of the house. (there is no disc in the optical drive.) hard restart there too.

i had already reloaded the drivers and software with no change. I've turned every energy saver setting i can find off. the dang thing still goes to sleep. i thought Front Row might be a problem because it kept starting up seemingly on it's own, so i deleted it. of course that didn't fix anything. (that Front Row thing happens on my laptop too.)

any ideas? anybody?

TIA

When people are reporting a blank screen - do they mean black with no video signal at all, or white with no image?

I get as far as the white screen with the Apple logo and the progress circle eventually freezes - but I am able to move the cursor with my mouse and change the volume with my keyboard. Has anyone else had this experience?

thanks

thanks irq!
i finally made the leap from tiger (where i did have incidental graphic fragmenting) to leopard
two days ago...... love it - faster than tiger in every way, but the graphics breaking up under the scroll wheel along with the comings and goings of the pointer and 1-2 pixel sized 'articles' randomly left across the screen was driving me nuts! i had earlier issues w/syncmaster 906bw trying to get the 1440x900 res to work. displayconfigX at first gave me the blue screen, so there was a second arhive & install of leopard. once the resolution worked there was still the graphics problem. thought i was going to have to ditch my ati 6000 (256mg) card and spend $500 for a new one. followed your link, downloaded the ati drivers (again - first done last fall) and the strin appeared in my library ati folder but nothing else changed. the most important step is to repair permissions with disc utility. as soon as that was complete and i rebooted ALL is well!
this is how i hoped leopard would look!

thanks again!

regards,

+G5 and ATI seems to be about the only commonality.+

Actually, I have a G4 MDD and was having sleep and artifact problems that just appeared a few days ago, four months after I installed a 9600 Pro in my computer and eight months after installing Leopard. Installing the ATI 4.5.7 driver seems to have fixed the problem though it's only been a few hours so anything can happen.
