AVCHD and my G5

I'm trying to get a handle on the AVCHD format.

At first glance it seems like AVCHD will superior to HDV but from what I understand I can't even consider using it till I get an Intel based Mac.

Is that true?

That little Sony HDR-CX7 is very tempting.

What's the general consensus on AVCHD vs HDV?

I had read that the AVCHD support requires Intel:

AVCHD is more efficiently compressed the HDV, but a bear to work with it.

An Intel is needed to converted it to AIC or ProRes on the fly. iMovie 08 works with it. You do need FCP 6.0.1.

Thanks for the replies.

Judging from the number of responses it seems that AVCHD is not widely adopted yet.

I suppose most FCP users are using the higher end cameras & formats.

There appears to be only one almost professional sub $2K AVCHD cam out, and it's the Panasonic AG-HSC1U AVCHD

Once AVC-Intra becomes available in a $3.5K cam, I would be definitely interested.
