Upgraded my Macbook Pro to Leopard over the weekend (default upgrade method) and tried launching Itunes for the first time since upgrading today to see that Itunes won't open and give me an error message that says "The iTunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occurred(-8791)"
Tried searching support site and these forums but didn't see anything.
Also tried reinstalling a fresh version of iTunes but no luck.
Go to your home folder > library > preferences > remove a file called com.apple.itunes.plist. Restart your computer (or logout/login). Try and open iTunes.
Followed your advice and after rebooting and starting Itunes I was greeted by the welcome to itunes wizard but once I finished those options and tried to go to my library - iTunes crashed with the same error message again.
So I tried it again by deleting all the com.apple.itunes.* files out of the folder and rebooting but I still got the same result (welcome wizard and then crash with -8791.
I have the same problem occurring on my PowerMac G4. I too trashed the preferences, got the welcome screen, loading itunes library.., then same error (-8791) again. so if nothing else, you're certainly not alone in this. maybe it's a bug?
When I try to launch iTunes (the most recent version) a blank error message pops up. No words, just a red exclamation point behind the itunes graphic and the only option is "okay" which quits itunes completely. I have no idea what is wrong since there is no error number? Any ideas?
I am losing my mind over this and have wasted so much time messing with it. Every time I try to open Itunes since upgrading to Leopard it gives me an annoying error -8791. I have tried:
repairing disk permissions
reinstalling Itunes
reinstalling quick time
reinstalling the large 10.5.1 Leopard update
NOTHING! and now I find out that removing leopard would be a nightmare too - I am screwed and their is no support for this error 8791 having scoured various forums - please please help!!!!!
My MSN Messenger won't allow me to log in eithe r- but that is minor compared to the 18 months of work I have put in to itunes.
I have been through pretty much everything listed in this thread and was loosing my mind in frustration over it - I even experienced a total system crash, which locked me in loop of the initial starting up your mac dialogue... (got out of that one with soft-rebooting the system)
To make a long and frustrating story short, it turned out that for some strange reason, the initial Leopard installment was flawed (don't ask me how). After reinstalling the operating system (press "c"-key while rebooting with the Leopard CD in the drive - choose the save settings and install option - alternatively backup all your "valuables" and reinstall without saving settings), my MacBook is running smoother than ever before!
