GarageBand '08 version 4.1 won't open. It tries then quits unexpectedly.
i've tried everything i can think of and have researched, but garageband will not open. it just initializes for awhile and then a window comes up reading, "the application garageband quit unexpectedly." all the other iLife applications work fine. i've reinstalled garageband a couple of times from my iLife '08 disk. i've deleted the preferences and disable the user fonts. repaired permissions... if you have any other tips, please help. thanks!
MacBook Pro_2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo / 1 GB RAM,
Mac OS X (10.5),
garageband version 4.1
Sometimes a corrupt .band file could be causing the trouble. An error with GarageBand is that it opens the last file used, and if it is corrupt, it will try opening the corrupt file every time. Try finding other .band files you have saved and launch them instead.
just tried it, no luck... i don't know what's going on here.
i find it interesting that the garageband application says it was created in 2006 and not updated like the other ilife applications. i tried to do a clean install of it from the '08 iLife cd, but it still says it was created in 2006. don't know if that has anything to do with anything...
Try moving GarageBand to a remote folder and reinstalling. If it appears again, you got the right one. Also check the version number. That will tell you more than the date it was modified.
well, i figured it out. i have melodyne installed on my computer, but garageband doesn't like the rewire plugin of it. i read the error report and opened up the console, which read it failed to load the rewire plugin. i just deleted it and then it worked!
thanks for the suggestions! they were very legitimate suggestions. when i called applecare they had me do the same things that were dicussed in this thread and others. thanks.
how do i delete that? i had melodyne installed, and just spotlighted 'melodyne' and deleted all associated files, but still doesn't work. if i spotlight 'rewire', i get nothing. what should i do?
Hi,
Same problem here.
Both Garageband and Logic Express won't load anymore since I installed a couple of audio plugins by Waves. I've already deleted, reinstalled, deleted etc. A couple of times, but to no avail.
Read on the Logic-discussion part of this forum that ReWire doesn't work with Leopard.
I've tried to remove everything associated with the new plugin, but Im obviously missing something.
Help 😟
I just figured out this problem and thought I would provide the exact location of the problem file. Celemony's Melodyne Uno running (or not running for that matter) in Leopard was the problem for me.
Go to: Macintosh HD/Library/Applications Support and remove MelodyneUnoRewireDevice (which is an alias).
Then go to: Macintosh HD/Library/Applications Support/Propellerhead Software/ReWire/ and remove both of the Melodyne components there. You don't need to remove the other ReWire components.
You may also need to go to: Home/Library/Preferences and remove MelodyneUno Preferences.
Note: you probably won't have to remove the Uno application from the applications folder if you want to wait for an update.
bryanmurphy14, I take my hat off to you, sir! You've saved me a lot of trouble.
not only is Garageband working but so also are Ableton Live 7 and Riffworks.
Before I installed Leopard on my Mac I tested it by loading it on a LaCie firewire
hard drive.I tried a few aps including Live and Riffworks and was happy with the result so I upgraded Tiger and lo ! neither would launch. So I knew one of the applications on my mac was the problem. But which one? I googled the Garageband problem as I figured I'd get a better response. And so it was! I had already begun to uninstall some of them but you've saved from having yo do all of them. Since I bought Melodyne as a download it would have been the last one I would've tried.
I now have OS X Tiger on my LaCie drive and can use Melodyne there without any problems (and also ProTools while I wait for a fix from Digidesign.
Wow! I was totally sceptical this was going to work -- my GarageBand 4.1.1 had also stopped working since upgrading to OS X 10.5.2, producing a crash on application start-up after a long initialization delay of each of my SW synths. I stumbled across this thread...
I didn't have a Melodyne installation to the best of my knowledge, but I did nonetheless find two components per beansupreme's post, in my Macintosh HD/Library/Applications Support/Propellerhead Software/ReWire/. Once I relocated those, GarageBand started straight up with no issues!
