Losing Wireless Connection... Tiger & Leopard

Hey

I own an MBP which is - as of yesterday - running Leopard. I have also installed all the updates Apple issued in the last couple of days

My wireless network is provided by a Netgear router - bog standard 108mbp model

A few weeks ago - while running Tiger - I started experiencing issues with my wireless connection. Everything had been fine until I tried connecting my MBP to the router via ethernet cable. It didnt seem to work, so I disconnected
Perhaps this is just a co-incidence, but worth raising.

Since this point, nearly everytime I close the laptop's lid and then re-open, it 'loses' the connection to my wireless network - no automatic reconnection occurs. It works occasionally, but not often

To remedy this, I have to go into System Prefs --> Network --> Assist Me --> Diagnostics --> then I look for my closed network (which uses WEP 40/128-bit hex). I am then able to reconnect to the network - the Airport signal guage at the top of the screen activates as normal.

Since installing Leopard, the issue seems to have gotten 'weirder'. Instead of just failing to connect, OSX now brings up a 'network chooser' box asking me if I want to join one of the networks it has detected. I've tried connecting to my closed network... but then it says 'Connection Timeout'. I'm unsure why I'm able to reconnect via System Prefs, but not via this 'network chooser'

Hopefully this has made sense. It's certainly a pain in a backside.
Note that I've checked the router and it works ok with my ethernet wired PCs and my crappy Dell laptop

Cheers

Same thing with mine...
Firstly I've upgraded Tiger to Leopard and AirPort acted quite the same, but Expose was slow, so I decided to Archive And Install Leopard over Leopard. Now system is running much better, but I've started experiencing AirPort connection drops..

Does anyone knows how to fix it ?
The issue is probably of Leopard's new network drivers...

Exactly. My wireless connection seems to fail after a few hours of inactivity. Example, in the morning I was surfing the net, I get home from school, and I'm disconnected. It sees "every other" wireless connection but the preferred network I use. Luckily it seems to be a quick fix, but its very annoying.

1.) Turn the airport off, then on again. Seems to connect after a couple seconds.
or
2.) Go to connection settings, turn the airport off, go to the preferred network settings. "Check them" and connect again. Yes very queer indeed, but it gets the connection back. Same as "1", but it does work if "1", fails after 3 mins.

best regards.

I had the same problem month ago on my express. It disappeared after an apple update. I bought the extreme since then. It ran flawless, with no drops or nonsense until about a month ago when it was updated. It now drops frequently and is quite annoying. I believe it is the extreme and not the iMac as my Xbox 360 also drops out at the same time. What gives? Is there an update due to solve this random dropping in and out?

Fix it **** it!

I posted about this same issue. I have spent countless hours this past week on the phone with network support at Apple and Linksys.

I have a linksys N router I use (WRT150N). I used it flawlessly before Leopard upgrade and with my wired desktop pc and two wireless pc laptops. The day Leopard came out and I upgraded, my internet connection on my macbook experiences the same issue as the OP describes. It happens almost everytime my computer comes out of sleep mode regardless if its closed for two minutes or 8 hours.

When speaking to Apple for two hours with an apple tech veteran, he is telling me its is the linksys wireless router. He believes this true because when the linksys G router came out, there were reports of this happening all the time. Apple engineers then went to Linksys as reported the problem, and after two firmware updates, the problem was fixed. Keep in mind that both all my wireless pc's work ok. So, I think somewhere between the Leopard drivers and the linksys drivers, lays the problem. It was suggested by another tech rep that I take my laptop down to the Apple store and see if it works flawless with the stores Airport Extreme router N technology. I called my local store and they have a non-secure N network running. Apple tech said that if wireless works flawlessly, then it was most likely the linksys router. In this case, then I would buy a new Airport Extreme N router at the store and solve the problem since the wireless pc's will work on this router. Only problem is, I have to buy a new router or wait until apple and linksys gets some updates out to solve this problem. Obviously, I'm not the only one with problem.

Hopes this helps. Anyone else that has this problem, it would be great to hear from you.

I was having similar issues with my Linksys-G wireless router and my new MacBook w/Leopard. I was ready to throw the router out the window. I finally solved my issue by changing the wireless channel on my Linksys. I just played with the settings until I found a channel that seemed to work (for me it is channel 1). Now it works great with my MacBook (no more issues). Previous to this my Linksys was set up to work with a Dell laptop.

Not sure if this has anything to do with your issue but I was very pleased when it worked for me! Good Luck!

Please post in the thread below also (18 pages so far). There are a lot of people experiencing the same problem everyone in this thread is having (dropped connections). It usually happens after long periods of inactivity for me (go to sleep, wake up, Airport says connected but there is no connection). I have to turn off and then turn back on Airport to get my connection back.

I was having the same problems... I was losing my connection every few minutes then it would re-join in a few secs.... Using a Linksys router... I did not have this problem when I was connecting via an Apple router... I went in to the system prefs. >network>advanced>TCPIP> Turn "Config IPv6" OFF. All has worked fine since I did this...

Hope this helps....

I am having similar problems with my wireless connection since upgrading to Leopard. I had NO issues while running Tiger. In Leopard, my system will usually detect the wireless network in my home initially upon booting the computer, but very consistently within a few minutes of checking my mail or surfing the internet, I will lose the connection. My network then does not show up on the list at all. I ask to "join another network" and have to type in the name of my network and password. I too get the connection timeout warning, but if I keep trying eventually it will find it and connect only to be lost again after a few minutes. I have also had the mail program get stuck and will have to force quit when it loses the wireless connection. Waiting on 10.5.1. Thank you

Hi all,
My partner and I both own a macbook, and we are connecting to Netgear WPN824 wireless router with WEP security without any problem until both macbooks were upgraded to Leopard. The problem we are having now is only one macbook can be switched on and connect to internet. If 2 machine are on at the same time, both machines will lost the connection and not able to go online until the router is reset.

Does anyone have the similar problem?

Thanks
Nick

here's my two cents: i have a linksys wrk54g router and a MBP... all worked fine before leopard upgrade.
The weird thing is that my macbook pro DOESN'T EXPERIENCE DROPOUTS IF IT'S PLUGGED INTO AC POWER (IT ONLY HAPPENS RUNNING ON BATTERY)!!!
quite curious... could be some sort of firmware problem with the battery/Leopard/airport card connection.
waiting on 10.5.1!
