Why cant I connect to my itunes

I pull up iTunes. I plug in the shuffle. my computer says unknown hardware can not be recognized. The device thing on iTunes does not pop up like its supposed to. Yes I have installed the new iTunes or whatever. What the heck. How do I do this. Also I charged my iPod for 12 hours. I unplug it. Turn it on and guess what. Its red for like two Seconds and turns off. Plz help me. Im new. Whats going on?

You're apparently using a USB port that isn't "high-power" ... make sure you're plugging into a port on the back of your computer and not the USB port on a keyboard, the front of the computer, nor an unpowered USB hub.
