Shortcut for creating footnotes?

I do almost all academic writing and must decide between Word 08 and Pages 08: I want to go with the latter (price is important!), but I can't find a way to put in a footnote without taking my hands off the keyboard, dragging the mouse up to "insert" then to footnote, etc. If a shortcut is unavailable for this - my most commonly used feature - I would be forced to wait for the new Word, with all of its potential hazards. Surely there is a way to put in a shortcut for this?

moon,

I had never done this myself, so I had to figure it out. Go to the keyboard shortcuts window, then click on the Plus at the bottom. Pages won't be in the list of applications because it's in the iWork folder, so click on Other, then navigate to Pages. In the Menu field, type Footnote, then define your key combination. Quit Pages. Restart it. Your new key command should be in the menu. At least, that's how it worked for me.

I have an old Powerbook G4 12" and can't seem to find a key combination that works. Can anyone suggest one that works for footnotes. A follow-up question is when I choose a combination do I have to restart the computer, the application, close the keyboard & mouse system preference window etc. I appreciate any help you can give with this problem.

The shortcut has to exactly match the menu item it is referring to, I suggest you have Pages open and just behind the preferences so you can refer to it. If need be take a screen snap of the pulled down menu by hitting +cmd shift 4+ then dragging the mouse over the area you want to snap.

As for suggested keyboard shortcuts, I always follow the old Word and Quark XPress convention of +cmd shift+ plus a memorable abreviation for anything to do with text. So you can try +cmd shift f+ for footer or +cmd shift h+ for header, maybe +cmd opt f+ for footnote as the obvious variant.
