Just as of yesturday when ever I tried to plug in my external harddrive, ipod video, or digital camera through either of my two USB ports, the computer didn't recognize they were there. When I plugged in the ipod the screen usually goes to a big sign and says "Do Not Remove" but now it won't even charge. When I plug in the external harddrive, it doesn't pop up as a folder on my desktop or even show up in finder. Lastly, when I plug in my digital camera, it usually opens up iPhoto and uploads the photos, now it won't give any inclination that it's plugged in.
There are a couple of things you can try. First, turn off the computer and remove the battery for a while, maybe 30 minutes or so. Sometimes the USB ports will "reset" and work again.
Also, a powered hub might help. It seems the USB ports are limited in what they can do, and if these limits are exceeded, they may shut down or not work if the externals are powered through the USB port. Something which is independently powered, like a printer, should work since it doesn't need to get its power from the port.
You can reset the USB ports by shutting down, disconnecting the power adapter, removing the battery and pressing the power button. Wait about 5 minutes, install the battery and power up.
I know that helped the threadstarter now, but I had the same problem.
My USB ports stop working about half an hour after starting the computer. They won't recognize the devices of give power. This is with AC and battery, and with USB devices that I've used many times before.
I'll restart, sync the iPhone and have it charge, about half an hour later, it stops, USB ports stop recognizing anything.
Any ideas? I've tried all the power management reset things, left battery out for half an hour, all that. It works after restart, then same thing.
