DIfferent Keychain Error - pls advise

First, I've searched for my keychain error, and cannot find any post dealing with it.

I've upgraded to Leopard on both my G4 powerbook and my new iMac. Both have the same error.

When I go to a website and enter a password, I get the typical "would you like to save this password" popup. If I select YES, I get:

"Keychain [insert name of keychain here] cannot be found to store [login name] your keychain may have been renamed, deleted, or its on an unmounted volume."

This gives me 2 options to select: Cancel or Reset to Defaults.

I just ran the Keychain First Aid, got errors, tried to repair them and ran another test. This is the result:

Verification started
Checking keychain configuration for [redacted] (user ID=501)
Home directory is /Users/[redacted]
Checked login keychain
Checked default keychain
Warning: keychain ~/Library/Keychains/[redacted] is missing the .keychain extension
Checked keychain search list
Keychain ~/Library/Keychains/[redacted].keychain could not be found
Checked contents of ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
Checked contents of ~/Library/Keychains/Microsoft IntermediateCertificates
Problems were found; you should choose the Repair option to fix them
Verification failed

Now, I did (at one point) select "reset to defaults". However, that hasn't helped apparently.

Thoughts?

This is really annoying.

Thanks.

Robert

Leopard Annoyances: Deleted printers, changed desktops, lost keychain, slower Safari, etc. Now why did I upgrade?

I received the same error. When looking at Keychain Access, I only see a System keychain, and none with my username. I simply created a new keychain, named it as my username, gave it my login password, and now the errors are gone.

Basically, I had to recreate the login keychain that is automatically created for new users, but was apparently wiped out when I used the Migration Assistant to transfer my user account to the new machine.

Hope this helps.

Nope. I went into the keychain library, duplicated the login.keychain file and renamed it with my login name.keychain.

Then in the keychain utility, I can see that (icon as well) and it contains all my login info as does the login.keychain keychain.

However, after a restart, I still get the same error message from my first post.

Running the repair utility shows that your fix (basically what I did) fixed ONE of the 2 errors:

Verification started
Checking keychain configuration for [redacted] (user ID=501)
Home directory is /Users/[redacted]
Checked login keychain
Checked default keychain
Warning: keychain ~/Library/Keychains/[redacted] is missing the .keychain extension
Checked keychain search list
Checked contents of ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
Checked contents of ~/Library/Keychains/Microsoft IntermediateCertificates
Checked contents of ~/Library/Keychains/[redacted].keychain
Verification completed

so I'm still missing the .keychain extension....

Thoughts anyone?

Okay, I ran Keychain First Aid on verify, and it came up with some of the same errors you received: login keychain not found, Unable to get infor for ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain (no such file), and Keychain search list not properly configured.

However, when I ran it to repair, it corrected all the problems.

I had also hit the Reset to Defaults button once, yesterday, before I took time to look into the problem.

What happens if you move the contents of your keychain folder to another place on your drive, and run the Keychain First Aid utility?

A few things (haven't dealt w/ your last post yet).

I reset Safari and it's just as slow. When I went to Gmail and entered my login info, the keychain was the "login.keychain" one and it asked if I wanted to add this password. I selected Yes and no subsequent error appeared.

HOWEVER, when I opened another tab for this support site and logged in, the [loginname].keychain message popped up asking if I wanted to add this password. i selected "yes" and got the same error.

Why would 2 different tabs ask for 2 different keychains?

Something is really wrong.

This may be a premature solution, but I've also noticed that in addition to Keychain Access--> Preferences, each keychain can have its own preference set in Edit--->Change Settings for Keychain.

In there, there are checkboxes for "lock after x minutes of inactivity" and "lock when sleeping". Somehow these got switched on and I've deselected them.

Maybe these are unrelated to the "Keychain search list not properly configured", but they may be causing the other annoyances I'm experiencing.

I did an Archive and Install of Leopard and discovered that my keychain was gone. It was not in ~/Library/Keychains/, nor was it in /Previous Systems.localized/.../Library/Keychains, nor was it in /Library/Keychains. I copied it from the superduper backup I wisely performed before the install to ~/Library/Keychains/, did a Keychain Access > First Aid and now all appears to be well.
