cant import my mpeg4 videos

i take video with a casio exilim ex-v7 camera. it supposedly takes the latest mpeg4 h.264/avc recordings. i download the pictures and videos into iphoto. when i try to import the videos from iphoto into imovie the videos are recognized as .mov rather than .mpeg4 and i cannot select them for import. it seems like i am finding others with this problem, but i thought the h.264 was recognized by imovie.
anyone have tips on how to import these movies?? thx.

Since the file is in an MOV container, there could be two possibilities. One, the audio may not be a standard AAC (or not use standard AAC settings), or two, it suffers from the same "bug" as MPEG4/AAC files exported from iPhoto and simply will not import in the MOV container. In the first case, the audio would have to be converted to AAC AAC with "acceptable settings" and in the second, it may be possible to simply place the data in an MP4 container.

Can you post a sample snippet for download and analysis or post back with specific audio audio compression format to include data rate and sampling rate.

jon,
how can i post a snipit? if i upload to google videos will it upload it exact format? i have posted on google video before. otherwise, i could email a few seconds of video.
or if you can tell me how to look for the details on the audio.
i am looking at dpreview.com regarding this camera it says it records in wav audio, i dont know if this is a general useless term or a specific useful term. thanks for helping though.

If you have a DotMac account a URL, upload it to your public folder. If your ISP provide server space, FTP it there and provide a URL. If you know how to create QTL or Reference files, upload the resource to a server and sent the QTL/Reference file. If file is small enough to be e-mailed, e-mail it.

i could email a few seconds of video.

Press my name for link to profile and address.

If you have QT Pro, use the "Properties" window with appropriate columns visible.

Use QT Pro or GarageBand to select "Movie to MPEG-4" conversion, "Pass Through" the video, and convert the audio to AAC-LC (Music) 128 Kbps stereo (64 Kbps mono) at 44.1 KHz sampling rate. This will fix audio without re-compressing the video and place both in an MP4 file container.

garage band does not seem to want to allow me to select a video to open. is there some way that i am supposed to select the audio portion only?

If the file plays in the QT player, then you should be able to import/load them into GarageBand. If the file is "visible" in the media browser, simply drag and drop it to the iPod/video track in Garageband project window. If not drag and drop it from the finder to the iPod/movie project track. Confirm replacement of the video. Once GarageBand finishes preparing the audio and video tracks, select the "Export to Disk" option in the Share menu. Chose the "Expert Settings" option. Once the program again finishes work, it will open the "Export" window. Select the "Movie to MPEG-4" pop-up and then press the "Options" button. When the next window opens, select the "MP4" file container. Under the "video" tab select the "Pass through" option. Go to the Audio tab and make your audio settings.
