4gb ram in june 2007 macbook?

i no up until now you could put 4gb (2x2gb) into a macbook but it will only use 3gb but just had a quick look in the apple store and have seen there is an option to upgrade to 4gb of ram on new macbooks. is it therefore possible for a late june 2007 macbook to run 4gb or has there been a hardware update on the new macbooks?
thanks simon

It looks like today's macbooks have been upgraded to the same core 2 duos as in the Pros with the 800mhz front side bus. It's this chip set that allows 4GB addressable memory. So check your profiler for your processor bus.

The core 2 duos with 667 according to Mac could only go up to 2GB, though OWC said they could address 3GB, of course according to OWC if you wanted to you could even put in 4GB into that set up, but would only gain marginaly extra performance.

Read the test carefully. The mid 2007 2.16 GHz model was tested not the 2.2 GHz Santa Rosa. The Pre Santa Rosa Core 2 Duo MacBook will hold 4 GB of RAM allowing it to meet the dual channel matched set mode. But it will only use 3 GB for general use. The SR Macbook will hold and use the full 4 GB of RAM. You can see the results from the test the different speeds attained with the different configurations. Some people on here have used 4 GB and some 3 GB. It is up to you on how much money you want to spend. I personally would get a matched pair and put 4 GB in. RAM is cheap right now and 4 GB of Crucial RAM can be had for less than 200 dollars. OWC and some other brands are just as good and cheaper I am just partial to Micron and Crucial which are the same manufacturer.
