Stacks: how do you make it a stack?

I must be really missing something simple, but I can't figure out how to make my stacks a stack. The default is a grid layout and I know you are supposed to be able to make it fan out or up like a stack, but how???

Anyone have time to help a dummy?

Thanks for helping me... but it didn't work (or I'm doing it wrong). When I hold down the mouse over the stack, which I think is the same as right-clicking, I get a menu, but not with the option I'm looking for. It gives me the options to 'sort by', 'remove from dock', 'show in finder' & 'open downloads'. There is no option to fan or anything pertaining to layout. Am I doing something wrong?

I had the same issue too. Thanks for posting the answer. However, is this not the dumbest thing in the world? There's nothin mentioned about not being able to get this option unless your dock is at the bottom. I also couldn't add folders to the dock while it was against the right side.

Problem for me is I routinely use two different macs everyday and having the dock in different places helps me to memorize where things are in the doc. Grrrr, now I gotta change my setup.

I felt just like Josiah "I must be really I missing something about making a stack"
I just searched for stacks and saw this ? 'cause I couldn't figure out how this stupid stack thing worked. I dock on the left side and the "stack" wasn't coming out. I'd only seen pics of it with the dock on the bottom so I figured it out there.
Where does everybody else keep their dock?
Why doesn't Apple allow the dock fan out from the side? That'd be fresh.
My file structure is designed independent of the standard one. How do you handle your files?
Now I know about stacks, but I think I'l keep my dock on the left side.

Dudes!

Thanks for finding the answer, it really had me puzzled... Blows that Apple decided to only have it work from the bottom (the problem being "stacking" items coming out from the dock on the side... but an easy solution would be to have it all fan out at a radius'd 45º angle and still stack - sort of like a deck of cards when you squeeze it together and let the cards fly... simple enough)

Are ya listening, Apple?
