10.2.8: Is there a way out?

I am running a G3 blue & white tower that has OS 10.2.8 on it. I fear this OS has become so outdated that it can barely function, esp. when on the Internet.

Are there upgrades to get me out of this OS system that I can just download from somewhere (now that life if up to 10.5)?

Or do I just have to buy a whole new OS package (well, one that will run on a G3 processor...)?

I have OS 10.4 on the system disk for my iBook laptop. Can I put THAT on my G3 and live to tell about it?

Any light anybody can shed would be awesome...

Thanks.

Leopard 10.5 will not operate on a G3.

You have to buy the retail versions of Panther 10.3 or Tiger 10.4. Both will operate faster than 10.2 if you have sufficient RAM.

The system disc for your iBook won't work on any other model Mac.

Hi Bud!

Here is some additional information.

Mac OS X Versions 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4, and 10.5, are complete system upgrades that must be purchased.

Once an OS has been installed, the point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.10 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.

Panther 10.3.x, and Tiger 10.4.x, are no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Leopard 10.5.x, is the most up to date OS.

But, if you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased, sometimes less expensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, HardCore Mac, etc.

As Texas Mac Man(Tom) posted, be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.

If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.10 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.

Additionally, Tiger 10.4.x ships on a DVD, so if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you will have to use an alternative method of installation.

The Tiger Media Exchange Program, referred to in that article, is no longer available.

Hi,

Turns out the iBook system disc only has 10.3.3 on it. But anyway...

When you go in the Menu Bar an click on the BLUE APPLE -Software-Update you can update to OSX 10.3.9

As you can see in my posted screen to you is that I have a iMac to an running OSX Tiger without any problem. But to install Tiger you will need a retail version of Tiger.

You guys rock! Thanks for confirming what my heart kind of already knew.

Turns out, even if I update the OS on the G3, the G3 processor won't support Leopard or the Adobe Creative Suite software I am looking to buy (they both need G4 or better).

So I think this tower's days are numbered...

Any creative suggestion on what do do with a G3 tower that still works but has been left behind by technology? Plant stand? Anchor?...

Mac OS 10.2.8 "Jaguar" is not so outdated that you cannot work with it any longer. ( The same applies to "Panther" 10.3.9 which some also consider "old" ) :

to make it short : *Do not use Safari or InternetExplorer on 10.2.x or 10.3.x* versions, because they are really old, consider using the recent versions of Firefox,Opera,Netscape,Seamonkey and so on

- *these Browsers are modern, "understand" the "Web 2.0" and do all run on 10.2.x* , go direct after installation of the desired Browser to adobe.com and click the "get flash player for PPC Mac" - Flash Version 9 is recent and will run also on 10.2.x and any Browser. This is point one to make your Internet Experience "modern". For Netscape/Seamokey and Firefox there are lot of free Add-ons to extend functionality.

AdiumX i+s a free Multi messenger+ - yahoo,AOL,ICQ,msn and whatever else - they have a version for 10.2.8 and it just works.

+Adobe Photoshop 7, CS, CS2 or Creative Suite 1 and 2 do all run on 10.2.8+
i+life up until ilife 04 ( iphoto 4, imovie 4 ) will run on 10.2.8+, itunes up until version 6.0.5.
+imovie 3.0.3 and iphoto 2 are also free+ available from Apples Download Service and run on all OSX.

+*Microsoft Office v X* and *Office 2004* runs on 10.2.8, too+.

*AppleWorks 6* runs on all OSX, if you download the latest Update to 6.2.9 ( free ) from apple.
*Apple Keynote first version also runs on 10.2.8.

_Have a look at versiontracker.com. they have listed all software available for each OSX Edition._

If you really wish or have to to update the OS to something "new", then go straight to Tiger, OSX 10.4.x - because what you are experiencing now willhappen again with Panther Systems in the very near future, and of course one day to Tiger.

For Tiger you will need at a minimum 256 MB Ram to even install this( but you will be happy using way more than 512 MB - your G3 tower supports up to 1 GB )

You can improve all OSX including Jaguar very much if you put in a "modern" PCI graphics card with more than 32 MB Vram, because "then Quartz Extreme" is activated and your graphicscard manages the Desktop, so the G3 CPU can manage the rest. Without Q/E your CPU must render the Desktop plus do whatever you want to run. Ati Radeons do exist in a "Mac Edition", be sure to get a PCI one, because your motherboard has no AGP.

Panther is a slight improvement over Jaguar, sporting a new look ( a lot of that "brushed metal" ), a finder with the sidebar, coloured labels and the "Expose" hotkey feature, Safari is still version 1.x, Mail is new, Adressbook overdone, the rest are just refinements over all features that are already in Jaguar.Isync 1.5 and ical 1.5 can be downloaded for free from Apple and will also run on Jaguar.
Panther is interesting for people that want to run Linux/Unix graphical Apps on OSX, because Panther includes an optional X11 environment, the only thing not available to Jaguar-

Tiger is Panther plus Dashboard/Widgets and systemwide Spotlight search functions, the Automator App, Safari is v 2.x,Mail is complete different. But again, this is no big diference to Panther.

Each time Apple tells "we added 150,200,300 new Features" - well, just search them, you will barely find them - it is all marketing 😉

Anyway - I hope you will keep your Tower running at whatever edition you choose from, and remember - there are also Linux's for download that will run on Macintoshes, just look for PPC, that would be an option to have a "modern" but for free OS.

Look at my Imac.....as long as you have 256mb of ram, you are good (With running Tiger). The thing has lots of life left in it. It is probably Faster then my iMac right now. I have edited Movies, Listen to music, surf the internet (Quickly I might add) among other things with this thing. Install Tiger, and you will be very surprised of how FAST it will be. I was in the same predicament. I had this imac with 10.2.x, and it was slower, used old itunes, and I had to use Firefox (Which is slow on old Macs) I could not believe the improvement on this thing after ward.(After installing Tiger) This is my first Post on the discussion board, so I hope this helps!
