Cannot Upgrade to Newest Version of iTunes - Please Help!

I have tried multiple times to upgrade my version of iTunes from 6.0.5.20 from the newest version; however everytime I go through the whole installation process and at the very end I get this message:

"The installation cannot directly update the version of iPod software found on this computer. Please unistall the iPod software and try again."

I spoke with a guy at the Apple store and he told me that I don't have to uninstall and then reinstall iTunes but I just don't know what else to do to fix this. Has anyone else had this problem?

Thank you!!

go into your Add/Remove programs, and uninstall every entry you find in there called "ipod for windows {date}" or "ipod updater {date}".

if Add/Remove won't let you remove one of those, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. use it to remove the installation configuration of any entries called "ipod for windows {date}" or "ipod updater {date}".

does an itunes install go through properly after that?

Thank you for your help!

Unfortunately I looked at my Add or Remove Progams and there aren't any listed as your described...

The closest I could find was:
iPod for Windows
iPod for Windows 2005-03-23
then there are two others which have the logo for AVG which is my Anti Virus Program they say:
iPod for Windows 2005-10-12
iPod for Windows 2006-01-10
and lastly there is my iTunes logo/program...

Any suggestions? I really appreciate your help!

Hello again!

So after I posted my message I realized that what you told me to remove was exactly what I listed.
So I went ahead and removed these programs:
iPod for Windows 2005-03-23
iPod for Windows 2005-10-12
iPod for Windows 2006-01-10

There were only three that I could find and you were correct I had to download the Utility pack as well.
Afterwards I tried to download iTunes agan and I got the same message at the end of the installation...

any thoughts? 😟

Doublechecking something. Did you also uninstall that "iPod for Windows {without a date}" entry that was showing up in Add/Remove?

If not, let's try uninstalling it too, and then trying the iTunes install again.

(Its a bit exotic to see one of those in Add/Remove without a date next to it ... which is why i didn't say to uninstall it in the previous post.)

Does the iTunes install go through with the "dateless" iPod for Windows out of the way?

If not, try heading into the CleanUp utility again. Is there a "dateless" entry for iPod for Windows in there too? If so, does removing the dateless entry with CleanUp allow an install to go through?
