SMTP TLS not working on Leopard w/Exim 4

I recently upgraded to Leopard. Sending mail used to work fine on Tiger and works fine on Thunderbird. Mail says:

The certificate for this server was signed by an unknown certifying authority.

Exim says:

2007-11-02 00:23:50 TLS error on connection from macbook.intra [192.168.211.179] (gnutls_handshake): A TLS packet with unexpected length was received.

I signed the certificate, but I don't understand why this worked fine on Tiger and still works fine on thunderbird. I use a self signed certificate for my IMAP access on the same server, and that works with no problems at all. The Exim error seems to imply that something else is going wrong.

Thanks

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.5)
