Mine decided to fail in the middle of a big sync (not sure why) with this message amongst others. Hm.

I did these things, so give 'em a try:

1) Try a different USB port - don't ask me why they're touchy
2) Restart your computer (which I did after none of the USB ports were behaving)
3) Reboot your iTouch (hold down home and sleep buttons till the apple icon appears.

Good luck...

The route to i took to fix this issue required me to reformat the disc on my ipod. (you will lose anything you have on your ipod if you complete these steps)

1. disconnect ipod
2. close itunes
3. go to control panel, then administrative tools, then services
4. highlight ipod service
5. click stop the service, do not close
6. plug in your ipod
7. open my computer
8. right click your ipod drive, select format
9. click start on format menu, once done, exit, unplug the ipod
10. go back to services, highlight ipod service
11. click restart the service
12. plug in your ipod, open itunes and it should work like new

i hope this works

I also have the same sync problem like mentioned above (timeout after sync about 2-5 songs). My iPod touch works fine with a Windows XP Pro PC and with a Vista notebook. But at home I use Windows XP (home edition) and the sync via USB does not work. I deinstalled many times iTunes, Quicktime and the other Apple programms (completely like mentioned on the Apple support pages) and also iTunes 7.5 does not solve this problem. I also added an additional Adapetc USB 2.0 card and also tried a USB hub with a externalpower supply. Yes, my iPod touch was always full of battery.
Nothing works. But I want to use my PC at home because there I have my music which I bought in the apple store.

Another sad issue was that I bought a music video in the apple store (on my office PC), it was loaded, but it was not allowed to copy it on my touch ??? Hmmm, i paid for it, but got nothing. Let's forget it...

Anyway, now I am very frustrated after 3 long evenings and give up. (I should keep care for family instead of spending my time with software bugs). I have a master in computer science, but it helps me nothing. For me it semms to be a simple USB driver bug. I hope it will be solved quickly, otherwise I will not buy any new music in the Apple store.
BTW, why is it not possible to sync via WiFi. Palm has solved this issue many years ago....

Does the new 1.1.2 update address this issue? I have gone through three touches after getting this error message trying to synch to my home destop PC. All to no avail. I tried everything Apple recommends--turning off virus software, updated dll's, uploaded songs one at a time, etc. etc--and I couldn't get it to work. I was able to use my touch after transferring all of my songs to my work laptop, which has more or less the same setup as my home pc except for different software. The only big difference I see is that the drive on my home pc is partitioned while my laptop is not. Has anyone received this error on a non-partitioned hard drive?

I plan on trying this again this weekend with the new version but I wanted to see if anyone has had any luck (or non-luck) before I do.

I tried the new update 1.1.2, but sorry, no success. I am not able to sync the iPod touch with my home PC (Medion MD8080). It is also not possible to reload the software from scratch. (recovery). The USB transfer is always stopping.
I hate it !!!! I think the problem is located in the USb driver coming with iTunes.
BTW the same home PC has no problem to sync an iPod (2. generation) !!!

I also have no problems with my Notebook with the same iPod touch. There I have two partitions. I never got any USB transfer abort.

Hopefully Apple will fix this bug very soon !!!!

i also have this problem...or it says disk cannot be read or written to. i've tried everything and found the only thing that has helped me get more than about 5 tracks on the ipod during each sync is to open windows task manager (ctl altdel) and right click everything associated to itunes, ipod and syncing and set the priority as high as it will go...realtime.
also closing down unnecessary applications may help (Antivirus software, Internet explorers, etc.) i have no proof to back this up but it now works a lot better for me...i get around 200 tracks on per sync...not ideal but better than before...apple need to fix it...fix it quick.
hope this helps a little.
