Problem with MS word & Excel - Microsoft Framework library issue

whenever I open up an application from MS Office 2004 I get the following message when its launched "An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library."
The app seems to open ok and function normally but I just don't know why this is now happening under leopard when it never happened before. Also the icons for any word or excel doc do not appear as word or excel icons - they are just shown as white pieces of paper with their file name.
Hope someone can help - I've erased and installed too many times now and still no difference
thanks

Me too.

I installed Office 2004 (and EndNote) after upgrading to Leopard 10.5 and something is amiss.

Three (probably related) symptoms I observed:

1. As bigwavesurfer13 reports, after opening Word, I'm greeted with the prompt: "An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library."

2. When trying to update Office 2004 via Microsoft AutoUpdate, the application recognizes any out-of-date versions, but then hangs and doesn't download anything (requires a force quit). Also hangs if running updates that were manually downloaded from Microsoft's website.

3. I subsequently installed the latest version of EndNote for Mac (v. X.0.2), but it won't integrate with (won't find?) Microsoft Word. EndNote should be accessible through Word's Tool menu bar.

I don't know who can fix this, Microsoft or Apple. So I'm posting in support sites at both places. Hopefully there is a fix soon.

I am probably not understanding the mechanics of this discussion thread correctly. Here, a user mainly describes an error message that appears every single time an Office app is launched. The thread is named after this main problem. In addition, a simple question is posted regarding icon preview.

To this, the only reply is from another user, saying ”Can't help you about the unexpected error… sorry it never happened to me“, end then suggesting one possible solution to the simple auxillary question posed.

As it stands, NO fix has been suggested in the thread for the main problem, but still the thread is marked with a bright-green star and the words ”This question is answered. "Helpful" answers available: 2 . "Solved" answers available: 1“. How that can be concluded, presumably from the simplistic answer to the obvious side issue in the matter. is beyond me.

Could someone please offer an actual suggestion for a an answer to the main question at hand here, or else mark this thread properly, as Not answered, or words to that effect.

Hi

I had same problem. This was because I had tried to start the "Testdrive" Version of Office on my mac before I installed the full version of Office.

I was able to solve the problem by deleting/renaming the "Microsoft User Data" Folder in the "Documents" folder.

Microsoft uninstall function seems to not uninstall everything... Bad enough that they clutter their application specific folders everywhere around on disc... May this is fixed in Office 2008.

Cheers
Daniel

Thank you Daniel Lang. The main issue has been solved for me. When I got my new MacBook Pro (upgraded with Leopard), I migrated from my PowerBook G4 via a FireWire cable. During that process, it seems that an older test version of Microsoft Office 2004 was transferred as well. When I realized that, I reinstalled the full version but experienced the "Framework library" message every time I opened an Office application - without much consequences though. Further to your blog, I made a spotlight search on "Microsoft" files and deleted them all, including the "user data" one as suggested. Then I reinstalled Office 2004 USING THE ASSISTANT (not dragging the icon over my hard disk as this did not work). The final step of the solution is to use the "Remove Office" option at the very end of the installation and click on all boxes ("including test versions"). The error message does not occur any more. Great! Thanks a lot.
