Anyone know how to enable OpenSSL in PHP on OS X Server?

I found this message in the forums here:

But there are no responses. I need to enable OpenSSL in PHP and don't know how. In the Server Manager under "Web"/"Modules" I verified the SSL module is enabled, but I guess that's not OpenSSL.

To get a forum software working properly I need to have OpenSSL working w/ PHP.

Any ideas?

You will need to build PHP with the "--with-openssl" option.

Quick question... I read through the tutorial, and I'm wondering whether I need to download the latest PHP4, or does PHP4 source exist somewhere in a standard install of OS X Server 10.4 so I could start with the ./configure step in your section 4 instructions?

Looking through the requirements, I'm not sure about the X11 SDK. I don't have an "OS X Developer Tools Disc" and one promising link I found in the Apple support area for an OS X Server X11 download went to a page not found. (I'm not sure that was the SDK anyway.)

How would a non-developer get the X11 SDK for OS X Server?

You must install the developer tools. Not just because of X11, but you need the whole XCode suite.

It comes with OS X Server and is on the DVD/CDs.

Alternatively go to http://connect.apple.com and sign up for a free account to download XCode.

I'm installing the Xcode stuff now from my OS X Server disc, but I don't see any references to X11 SDK on there. There's a X11User.pkg on the install disc, but I don't think that's the SDK. Searching for "X11 SDK" on Apple's website results in 0 hits.

If the X11 SDK is installed with the Xcode tools, then I guess I'm good to go. 😉

It is an option when installing XCode. Customize your installation and make sure it is selected.

Excellent, I got everything installed and followed your tutorial... with two exceptions:

1.) "make install" failed, I had to run "sudo make install"

2.) I added "--with-openssl" to the ./configure statement

Do you know if there is a way to check that OpenSSL is working properly with PHP, or at least that it was successfully "added" to PHP?

1. You had to prepend sudo, because you were not logged in as root as mentioned in the tutorial.

2. To see what is installed issue php -i or create an info.php file (see tutorial)
