Mac Freezes and fan goes into overdrive!

Help! First of all, sorry for the length of this... (ahem...)

I have a *Dual 2.3 GHz G5* running OSX ( 10.4.10) that has started to freeze up to 4 times in a working day (most noticably when having iTunes running - but not always) and then the fans start to run fast (and noisy!) and doesn't stop until you 'force' shutdown using the button on the front of the Mac.

Software update is... well, up to date. The Mac has loads of room round it - so shouldn't be overheating (would the system freeze if it overheated or do the fans cut-in to stop overheating?).

There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it as this also happens when iTunes isn't open (i.e. I sometimes back-up files overnight and this problem will occure sometime in the early hours - but again, not always).

I have run the Hardware test from the DVD that came with the Mac - with no errors/problems found.
When I run Disk Permissions from same DVD, it will invariably come up with differing permissions in iTunes, which it says it fixes.

The finder will also 'crash' intermittently - any folders open on the desktop will all close, but no open applications/documents are affected (this can be really annoying when hunting down a file in a folder buried deep within other folders - you eventually find the one you need then everything disappears and you have to start again!!)

*Can anyone shed any light on what could be wrong and how I can fix it!?*

*Many thanks in advance,*

Col

Hi, and a Warm Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Power Mac G5 Forum!

You could try running Disk Utility (the one on the 10.4.10 drive) > Verify Disk on the boot drive. If it finds problems, you can run Repair Disk from the most recent system disk DVD you have - may be the 10.4 retail disk

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh1018.html

Probably wise to run Disk Utility > Verify Disk after a 'hard' shutdown (with the power button), anyway.

There may be a clue as to the cause of the freezes in system.log (Utilities > Console > Logs) at around the time of the big chill. You could copy and post the log from a few lines before the shutdown to completion of the next Startup.

Good Luck.

Hi,

Could also be a memory problem. Especially programs like Itunes are memory hogs.. Don't know what your memory config is like, but I would suggest removing a PAIR. and than test again, if you have no problems for a day or so, switch to the different pair, and see how the system behaves than... In my case it was bad ram......

Otto

Thanks for suggestions people! I'll try swapping the RAM out as soon as I can.

Maclover - what part of the console logs would be best to post here? There seems to be quite a few?

FYI: I nearly always run a Verify Disk and Verify Permissions after one of these crashes (starting up from the DVD) with no reported problems, except sometimes a permissions thing with iTunes.

Many thanks once again.

Hi,
Can you elaborate on this for me?

I have a DP 2.7 G5 Tower and lately I come into my office to find it with dark screens (dual monitor setup), and I am unable to in any way control it by the mouse or keyboard. I imagine it's "hung?" The fans are on full blast and it sounds like it's planning to take off at any moment. I've awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of it and it's in that same state. What to do?

I restart it at the power button. I then have to run Disk Utility to verify all the disks and RAID setups. What a hugh pain. Anyway, I read about the coolant leaks issues. I started running a temperature monitoring program for the past few months, and its been doing about the same type of pattern since I started monitoring it. Doesn't appear to be unusual.

Everything appears to be working fairly well, except for this issue. System is OS X.4.11, and checks out fine with Disk Utility. So far the hard reboots haven't done any damage to my disks, but it worries me greatly. Also the "liquid cooled aspect worries me greatly.

Have any ideas, comments or opinions? Anybody?

Let me know.

So long for now, TOM

Hi Tom,

The next time your Mac crashes, a dialog box about a system crash should appear when you boot back into Mac OS X. Please save and post the crash log.

In the meantime, try the Apple Hardware Test disc and the extended test if you have not already done so. Your computer will sound like it is preparing for takeoff during testing, but it will not actually lift off.

I've had this problem with my Imac G5 pretty much since new 3 years ago. Had applecare which expired last week. I've brought it in to Apple store at least 3 times for this same problem. Have had 2 logic boards replaced under Applecare, though they only have record of one in the computer. I've archived and re-installed the OS. I've pulled out 3rd party ram to no avail. Even removed the wireless card after bringing it in last week and that was the last thing they could think of. Have never heard of the coolant issue, and will ask them, as it just froze up again yesterday. I had them create a troubleshooting file since this has gone on for the entire time I've owned it, and they haven't solved it under my applecare term. Recently upgraded from OSX 3 to OSX 4, still having same problem.

Dec 28, 2007 1:22 PM in response to Whitedogpoo

I just started having the same problem in the last week or two. About the time I upgraded to the new safari and quicktime. These are the issue's.
1. Random freeze when surfing with Safari
2. Will not wake up when it's in sleep mode
3. It's in sleep mode but suddenly the fan goes nuts and sounds like a jet taking off.
4. Grey screen of death appears. Kernel panic?

I ran the hardware test and did an extended test on the memory, all checks out fine. I used apple's hardware test and Techtool's.
I just did a complete new install of Leopard, zero'd the drive and everything... same problems.

Talking to several friends and clients, they just started having the exact same problems. So it's not a coincidence.
I have zero doubt that it's a software problem, my guess is safari and quicktime.
I also don't have any faith that Apple will fix it. They would rather have us run out and buy new mac's. I guess i'll just wait for another class action lawsuit to fix things.

i also have had this happen since i bought it at first it was once in a great while and only when you bring it out of sleep, but since ive upgraded to leapord it happen about every 3rd time its woke up,it doesnt seem to do any damage test show nothing apple care knows nothing,so i shut down my g5 every time i leave the house just in case it catches on fire, but hey mayby thats what it will take for apple to look into this and do something for us,i love my mac but this problem is scary good luck every one.ps my sons imac doesnt have this problem at all so i dont think it would be a software issue such as safari or quike time or they would all have it right? it seams to be just the g5 duals maybe a recall is in order apple what do you think? before theres a fire and someone gets hurt!!!

I am a first time user and I have read a lot about the G5 excessive fan speed while in sleep mode. I also appreciate the "Hovercraft" and "Jet Plane" references. Here is what I have figured out...
Background: I have a Firewire/USB PCI Card (Generic) installed. I have a Belkin USB 4 Port Hub attached to it. I have a Belkin 4 Port Switch attached to that (I share an Epson Printer, D-Link 7 in 1 Card Reader, SONY NetMD, and others through this set with my Dell Computer (Windows 2000)).

I have more recently encountered problems with the fans running in "Hovercraft" mode when, either I put the system to sleep, or it does so on its own after 15mins. It does not happen immediately but after a few minutes "sleeping". I have disconnected the Belkin switch and left the Belkin Hub and still the same. I have disconnected the Hub and the Switch and connected everything directly in the firewire/USB Card (Generic) and still the same problem. I went out thinking that the Firewire/USB Card was the problem and bought a new Belkin 4 Port USB PCI Card ($49 plus tax) and got the same result. However, my G5 does not freeze up - no open programs running at the time it goes into sleep mode. I cannot, however, get it to wake up from the sleep mode, by any means. I must press and hold the power button for 5 seconds to get it to shut down and then restart the system. As I am type right now, the system is very quiet.

Here is what I have discovered. I reconnected the Hub and Switch (wired) to each other, but instead of connecting them into the PCI USB Card, I connected the line that connects the Hub and Switch to the USB Port on the Apple Keyboard. I have not had a problem since.

So what does this mean? Is there a problem with my Fans control unit, the PCI slots, or something else? There is no coolant leaking and no read light(s) on the the CPU...

Any suggestions before I purchase AppleCare and take this unit in. I have owned an Apple IIe, LC475, PowerMac G3 (Beige) and now a G5 Dual 2.7LCS. I have not has the slightest problem with any on these systems until now.

I welcome any thoughts... from anyone...

Thanks,
DoubleG1

hey guys sorry thats not the issue mine did it with no hubbs no nothing just the g5 the moniter and keyboard, mine only does it when awkening from sleep not while in sleep not while out of sleep, yes its a pain to restart but my main concern is will it progress to a fire hazard, dont waste your mony on apple care they wont find a **** thing,i think apple knows the problem is with the cpu but does not want to recall thousands of them,i sent emails and phone calls to apple when this first started and since and there take is we dont see a significent amount of complaints to worry about it. so again hopefully there wont be any fires from hoover craft ignition, any way we are all waiting for apple to do the right thing and recall, recall, recall!!!!!!!

Hi DoubleG1--First advice--go buy the AppleCare RIGHT NOW. I have a G5 dual 2GHZ with OS 10.4.11 (just installed 2 weeks ago). I have had the problem with the blazing fan speed for perhaps the past 8 months or so, even with the 10.3.9 OS. Last June, when this machine was 16 months old, I had to have one of the processors replaced to the tune of $510. Two months prior, my 23" monitor died. I had not purchased the AppleCare, so it all came from my own pocket. Buy, buy, buy!

For the past month or less, I have had a "creak" sound coming from the CPU, occurring every second, just like something that was going round and round would make if it needed to be oiled. The "faster than a jet plane" fan has started to occur again, sometimes after coming up from sleep, sometimes all on its own. A few days ago I came into the house and could hear the fan just roaring from my office in the back of the house. I had to shut it off using the button on the front of the CPU. Occasionally, I get the screen of death when I try to boot up. This morning I tried 3 times to boot, each time getting that screen (a gray screen with a circle with a line thru it.) I left it on and after a few moments, the fan began to speed up. So, I shut it down and tried again. It booted right away. I think it has something to do with the fan. I'm just praying it's not a precursor to another processor failure. Anyway, I'm taking it into the shop this week, along with a print out of this discussion thread. I never had this problem with any other Mac I've owned. Right now I hear the creak, creak, creak. . .

Dec 30, 2007 7:39 PM in response to Benny Li

Hey Benny Li,
I found out something interesting... I unplugged all of the connections to the Belkin USB 2.0 PCI Card and plugged the Belkin 2.0 Hub directly in to each of the two 2.0 USB Ports on the back of the G5, on separate occasions, and when I try to manually put the system to sleep It immediately woke back up - it would not go to sleep. The only USB Ports that seems to work is the USB 1.1 Ports on the Apple Keyboard, which will obviously render any USB 2.0 devices from working with the 2.0 standard.
Now, the Belkin Switch I spoke of in my last post (Dec.29.2007) is a USB 1.1 version, but this should not affect anything should it?

My computer has been intermittently (every couple of weeks) shutting down and having the fans go full force. Dual 2.3 G5 Tower. Took it into the local authorized dealer. They ran diagnostics over night. No failures. Recalibrated the fans and sent it home. Happened again a week later. Took it in. Ran diagnostics all weekend. No failures. Charged me $60 and said to reformat and reload everything from original disks. Just crashed again. (It always does this when I'm not near the computer and, my guess, is it has already gone to sleep.) Can anyone tell me anything based on this latest crash report?
