Has the 10.4.10 wireless dropout issue ever been resolved?
I've searched but cannot find an answer so...
Has the 10.4.10 wireless dropout issue ever been resolved? I still have dropouts constantly. It worked perfect before I updated but since September have been living with turning my Airport on and off to resovle many times a night. I would think there would have been a patch by now.
I really don't think it is an issue specific to 10.4.10. The 10.4.10 update came around the same time the 2007-004 Airport update was released. I have had unending problems with Airport since the 2007-004 update. After reinstalling Tiger and installing all updates (including 10.4.10) except the 2007-004 update, I don't have any other dropouts.
It appears that Apple migrated the 2007-004 update into Leopard because I'm having the same dropout issues again since switching to Leopard.
I had the problem even before I did the 2007-004 update. It all started when I went to 10.4.10 a few months back. I tried the 2007-004 update and it did bubkus. Now you have me concerned about going to Leopard.
Thanks for posting this. Since Monday evening my wireless drops out every few seconds (making it virtually impossible to get this far without reconnecting 5 times) during various periods of the day. Sometimes I can surf for hours without any ill effect and other times it just will not stay connected.
Is there not a preference which can be dumped?
And IS it CONFIRMED that the update was to blame? Because I only have had this problem since Monday gone while my husband, who NEVER EVER updates, has had it happen since about a year.
Thanks' MacBraveheart for the link over to here.
I learned over the years, don't do updates as soon as they appear.
I don't have the iPods, so those high load updates don't load here as well.
This Leopard is really a poke in the eye as far as I'm concerned. I'm not doing it.
This machine stops at Tiger.
The new gear will have to have it loaded fresh from factory before I go with it.
So many here are having major costly issues with Pro Applications that no longer work
when their lively hood depends on it. It must be devastating to clients with deadlines.
You see who contacted Apple, and get a response back 'they don't know anything about it',
really punched out the wind in my sail. This a is a world wide crisis that will get blown out of proportion like a firestorm if it hasn't already.
I waited, as I'm sure others have 6 months for the new OS, and was really looking
forward to a new Mac Tower. Not a converted one.
$5000 is nothing to sneeze at upgrading beyond a laptop.
That's a decent used car. By the time it's loaded. I have an easy $3G in this Powerbook.
The Nice part, Apple Care, do a good job.
Must be difficult for some to take advantage of. Distance wise.
I travel to Europe everytime with him. While at Apple Store in Amsterdam,
the store closed, and they stayed with it after hours so I could continue my tour. It's great!
Feb 05 when powered up the first time, this Powerbook has never had a 'Blue Screen of Death'.
I can't count how many times a month on other gear.
Granted, in the background is a PC tower, and what-ever laptops. I'm sure most others do as well.
Mine are not allowed on-line for the last year or more. One is on 24/7.
This has benn an Off again/On again problem since 10.4.8/0.4.9/10.4.10/10.4.11.
I actually think the problem is errata in the Intel Chipsets, especially the Books.
Yet many have cured this by either reverting to a Previous version of Tiger, or simply, (LOL), rolling back Airport to some earlier version of the kexts.
Some have even cured it by getting rid of the airport.kext2, while that had no effect for many..
If someone were to pay me a few grand to taken IntelBook... I'd just Archive & install the version it came with... and not upgrade for certain past 10.4.8.
Most of the forums I've looked at show a torrent of problems around July after 10.4.10 but then the trail seems to go cold after the airport update so it's comforting to know that I'm not alone on still having problems.
I'd be interested to hear whether those still having problems with their wireless connectivity dropping are still finding, as I am, that the problem is limited to working for the battery alone (my connection drops every 2 mins on battery but absolutely no problems on mains).
Spoke to a couple of guys at the Genius bar and they drew a blank and just said that they were unaware of problems with 10.4.10 but to check download support and make sure I'm up-to-date. I've added the last airport update but it's made no difference and having just run out of warranty, I'm feeling really shafted by Apple. I love my Macbook but it's now a very expensive paperweight if I can't really on being mobile with it.
Can anyone advise if I've missed a forum which suggests that Apple still acknowledge that there's a problem? There seem to be far fewer of us with problems since the July update?
BDAqua- I see this problem since Monday ONLY on an Intel MacBook Pro running a non-recent update to 10.4.10 as well as on a G4 Powerbook running a non-updated 10.4.9 (I think- I know he ignores ALL updates!) which has been happening since the beginning of the year.
So NO rhyme or reason as far as I can see.
As for 7oaks- interesting point about battery and mains differences- you are right. I do not have to reconnect five times PER PAGE CHANGE for Safari (just to keep it going I hover over the connection and keep selecting my hub) but only occasionally (once or twice an hour and every time I open the lid...).
You are not disappointing- I have the same problem (just gone from once ever 10 seconds to once every other hour). But there IS (for me) a marked improvement. Which does beg the question WHY mains power would favourably affect the drop-out rate... Hmmm...
I wonder if there's tables somewhere that it uses, like the OS uses for what speed to run the fans at what temperature, except maybe for signal level or voltage?
First, let's say we don't know for SURE that this issue is unique to 10.4.10. Or are we?
Second, lets be sure we don't have other hardware or router issues involved, so we can rule those out...
Then we can file a bug report with Apple and see if someone will respond.
The symptoms of this issue are:
You are connected to a wireless network, get great signal, then internet response just stops, you still have the signal indicator. Verify networking is stalled by
attempting to ping your local router or doing an 'arp -a'. You will not be able to ping the router. Click on the airport menubar until the menu pops up, then release, presto ping starts working and your internet page loads...
It is not ROUTER induced (at least we assume the routers are not the faulty components they appear).
It appears to be marginally less frequent when the computer is mains powered. At least for a good few of us. But it does NOT resolve the problem entirely!
I actually see the bars on the airport status "grey out" a lot of the time and ALWAYS if I close the lid and then reopen. But like you say- I can drop the menu down, reselect the "network" (never thought to just hold the drop down menu and release) and it will continue loading pages.
Just occasionally the network will disappear off my drop down menu for selection but releasing and dropping it down once more usually brings it back.
This began without reason after a weekend without the computer and NOT after an update. The most recent updates I did were over a fortnight ago at the time and I had had NO problems until now.
There is a workaround. After I updated my MB the airtunes sound drops out and wlan.speed is pore.
In iTunes choose multiple speakes, select Computer and your AirPort. Wait for sound, then deselect computer. This should solve the dropout problem.
I also updated my iMac and there is no problems so far and performance seem to be better.
Apple should really address the wlan and dropout problem, I tested a downgrade to Tiger and the problem was gone.
"Click on the airport menubar until the menu pops up, then release, presto ping starts working and your internet page loads..." Doesn't work on my computer. I have to turn the airport off and then on again to get online again.
